Can UFO Sightings Be Explained By Sprites?

I saw this article up on MSNBC and was wondering what everyone's opinions were. I've never seen a UFO, but I'd imagine that for those that have, this is somewhat insulting of people's intelligence.

Some UFOs can certainly be explained as unusual weather phenomena. It's still hard to explain something like the Parker Hickson abduction as a plasma discharge. Some UFO activity is actually too weird to be explained as aliens. That's pretty weird.

While I do agree that some sightings could be due to this. However, I believe this is an attempt to totally discredit the phenomenon. What do we call those that are seen during the day? How about sightings that happen during clear skies or those during overcast that will not become a storm? What to the abductees? I live in western Wyoming. If you where to ask the locals here if they have ever seen a ufo (they know the difference between a plane a chopper) 9 times out of 10 they will say yes they see them all the time. I can say that same thing. If you are now asking why they don't come out with it, they will say why bother. As one of these people I do find this article to be an attack on my intelligence. I like how they discredit people, even those with a 142 IQ and a physics degree.

I totally agree. I'm sure some UFOs can be attributed to this. But some definetly are not.

Its interesting that both friday and today (monday) there were articles on the main page of MSNBC about things that can explain UFO sightings.
