A state proposal to add a 4% tax for downloading movies and music will also apply to Internet porn.

Gov. Paterson recently suggested the so-called iPod tax to help close a $15 billion budget deficit, but few realized the levy would also apply to XXX-rated material.

The skin industry denounced the move as a cheap political stunt.

"The last thing any of us need isan additional tax," said Steven Hirsch, the CEO of Vivid Entertainment Group and self-proclaimed King of Porn. "These are very difficult times and nobody can afford to lose even one customer."

The new tax technically isn't a sin tax, since it applies to all "digitally delivered entertainment services."

Well it's about time that the big brains out there got to this conclusion.

Not only have they set outrageous taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, now some sneaky brain has come up with this..

They could probably balance the stupid effing budget with the windfall from this, if it makes it past committee and actually gets to the floor.

I doubt that this will get far as most of the porn in this country comes from California and that's where the big $$$ donors are for those campaign war chests.

The thing that bugs me about this whole thing is this...

Taxing a download to your phone or Ipod. It's not a movie or a song...it's porn.

Should the government be profiting off of the porn industry??

What if the porn comes from Russia or Bangkok?? Who gets the tax proceeds?? You know they'll want a piece of the action.

People still buy there porn? i mean my grandpa does but he's like 68 years old. i think there market target wont last to long.

that really does sound bad

but taxing the other things like normal videos and music, that sounds pretty bad too

sad thing is i can see a wave of new taxes like this coming

look at this as a good sign tho

they expect us to be ALIVE in the near future to pay taxes

If you read the article the porn is the least of the problem. The download tax is for all media be it a Hannah Montana album, a Scooby-Doo cartoon or Debbie Does Dallas.

The article chooses to highlight the pornography because TPTB know very few people would oppose taxing porn.

The new tax technically isn't a sin tax, since it applies to all "digitally delivered entertainment services."

"This is simply bringing the tax code in line with technology," said Matt Anderson, a spokesman for the state Division of the Budget.

"Regardless of whether or not an item is purchased at a brick-and-mortar store or online, it would be treated consistently."

This has nothing to do with porn and everything to do with extending the extortion funded police state.
