Donald Keyhoe's book "The Flying Saucers Are Real" is a good starter book for people interested in the phenomena. It was written in 1950 and has a lot of good documented cases that Maj Keyhoe personally investigated. It is historic in that it shows how serious the US Air Force was on the subject. Many people were watching metallic craft and not weather phenomena as the AF and other authorities would have one believe.

Great stuff. Keyhoe died lonely and in virtual poverty and to many is a sign at the crossroads. He's a symbol of a time when UFOs were almost officially acknowledged. Regrettably, the military opted to deny their existence and roll out a policy of ridicule that can be seen to this day. 51 years later and the charade goes on. Although people clammer for disclosure, who knows the reasons for the silence?

Keyhoe and Ken Arnold were early heroes. They deserve a lot of credit.

While remaining a sceptic believer, I feel more comfortable watching old footage and testimonys. He seems to genuinely believe and be honest about what he is saying.
Must have been a hard time fighting with media, it certainly seems that Wallace had a slight biased oppinion about this subject.

The only thing about Keyhoe is that I read that he retired from the marines in the 20's, so I wonder how much information he would have been able to retrieve 20 years later and after a world war. And how well he would have been able to interpret the answer or lack thereof from a new generation of military officials.

I don't think the coverup went into full swing by then, just speculation of course. They were just starting to build up the walls and figure out how to belittle the subject and shift public opinion about it,what buttons to push and to compartmentalize it all.Of course im also still a skeptic and prefer the terrestrial explanation to extraterrestrial until some new evidence pops up,definetly something flying about up there though.

There's been a dance with the truth, depending on the circumstances. Notice the difference from a 1947 Truman press conference and one just after the DC sightings:

1947: Q. Mr. President, have you seen any flying saucers ?

THE PRESIDENT. Only in the newspapers. [Laughter]

Q. Any explanations of them from over here?

THE PRESIDENT. Only the explanations I have seen in the newspapers. Did you ever hear of the moon hoax ?

1952: REPORTER: "Did the Joint Chiefs of Staff talk to you or concern you about the unknown, or unidentified, flying objects?"

TRUMAN: "Oh yes, we discussed this at every conference that we had with the military and they were never able to make me a concrete report on that."

REPORTER: "Do you have anything on the subject, Sir?"

TRUMAN: "No I have not. I haven't anything on the subject, and... There's always things like that going on, flying saucers and er we've had other things, you know..."

When it suits their needs, it's either "nonsense, there's nothing to it" or "oh yes, we're on it." I don't think it can be both.

I love these older footage videos, just seems "pre-hoaxs" to me..... here is another good one from 1966 "CBS REPORT" on UFO, Friend Foe or Fantasy? Featuring J Allen Hynek & Donald Keyhoe. The people
interviewed just seem authentic?...

Video Here...www.youtube.com...
.
You can see that the guy right at the end of the video tells it how it is.
His emotions and actions scream truth!

Good link, since the first time I saw it, that guy really struck me. Definitely 100% genuine in his conviction. The dismissive plan to ridicule the subject has these adverse effects on decent witnesses. Then again, ridiculous witnesses should be effectively dismissed

I heard an interview between Don Ecker and Terry Havens about the apparent media disinterest. Havens has researched the second Malmstrom AFB (ICBMs) UFO incident of the 1970s. Pretty solid stuff and in all the local media at the time...not a whisper nationally. From the days of Keyhoe and at least lip service to sightings...to Malmstrom in the 70s. O' Hare, Hudson Valley, Stephensville?

The interview is an hour long mp3 and well worth a listen...right click & save as
