Our sun will die, of course, about six billion years from now. But things could get ugly long before that. The steady gyrations of the solar system today may conceal the seeds of chaos. Even the tiniest of irregularities can build up over time, gradually altering the paths of the planets. Between now and final sundown, it has been calculated, there is a roughly 2 per cent chance of catastrophe. Mars might drift too close to Jupiter and be thrown out of the solar system. If we're very unlucky, hot-headed Mercury could run wild and smash into Earth.

Geez...Reading this, I know cliche but..how small and unimportant we are..Mars may thrown out..Mercur hits Earth..They are like billiard ball arent they..
During the article the author is not mentioning about the "tiny irregularities". What might they be??
Does it mean that sometime God will be bored and begin to play billiard??

This clearly explains how everything in the universe is fragile and is operating in a tight equilibrium of forces. Thus, even a small change of gravity will result in the change of orbits of planets and sling shot it towards other planets.

I think it's more of an example of "Order out of Chaos". IMO god would definitely not be gambling with this scenario. To rely on life (man) to become powerful enough with his technology to shake things up on a solar scale, that's the true gamble. This is just a larger reflection of a forest burning down on earth.

Shuffles the deck, and gives new life a chance.
