The Greek work translated as "the love of money" is:

philarguria fil-ar-goo-ree'-ah

avarice noun-Insatiable greed for riches; inordinate, miserly
desire to gain and hoard wealth.

A good way to translate the verse would be "avarice is the root of all evil."

It goes to show ignorance is a root cause of evil too. People misquote, even mis-translate the verse.

The most insidious form of avarice is greed for power by religious people.
