In college we carried our books in shoulder bags.

Not me...used a nice leather backpack

Messenger bags are cool, backpacks are okay if you're young enough, the dude getting out of the car with the big tote is hopefully just carrying his girlfriend's beach bag into the apartment.

Anything that gets squeezed between your arm and one side is only appropriate if you're gay and have impeccable taste.
