Although this is a separate (yet related) issue, I happen to think that mandatory military and/or civil service would do a world of good for this country. Kids these days (and I'm only 27, so I'm down in the trenches myself!) are spoiled brats with absolutely no work ethic, no manners, no sense of sacrifice, and no sense of patriotism. Obviously there are exceptions, especially the brave men and women of our armed forces. There are also many hard-working, kind and intelligent young people who attend college or are working in the private sector. However, these good kids are greatly outnumbered. Our nation is on a decline in every measurable standard. This is especially the case when it comes to morals. Our education system sucks and our parents are even worse, for the most part.

If people were made to enlist in some sort of mandatory service to our nation for two years at the age of 18, then I think we would begin to see a big improvement. Imagine how much good it would do a spoiled, snobby, airhead teenage girl to have to roll up her sleeves and spend two years or so training, learning and then working to help the less fortunate.

Sadly, I don't see anything like this happening in America- at least not without a major disaster or world crisis preceeding it.

As someone who never enrolled in the military and never really done extensive volunteer work, I wish that I had been forced into it. I know that if I had, I would be a much better person than I am today.

I will close by saying that I am ashamed of the MTV generation in which I was raised.

Agreed. Mandatory military service for everyone at the age of 18. Not only will it so some of these snobby little RB's good to get their hands dirty and break a nail, but some of these wannabe gang members(and real gang members)might learn from some real discipline. But 3 years might be a better plan. Give those that don't have high school diploma's help getting GED's and the rest of them training in ways that can be put to use once their term of service is over.
And while these people might not be in the military, it should be understood tha if a conflict breaks out and their particular skills are needed, then combat zone, here we come.

The problem with this is that once deployed, you may find your self as a cook or dishwasher, however the people of other countries will consider you the same as a military personall or worse if you are in civilian clothes.

Without the proper military training, your head is going to get cut off.

Actually, the financial crisis was designed to cause millions of people to be unemployed.

No need for the draft when military service is the only option to survive the unemplyment crisis.

"Although this is a separate (yet related) issue, I happen to think that mandatory military and/or civil service would do a world of good for this country."

Wrong.

I got drafted and now I'm a war Criminal along with hundreds of thousands of other men who were also forced to fight in that war.

Of course, under a plan like Obama's, I might only have been drafted into a role that facilitated the prosecution of that war (ie.logistics, paperwork etc.).

*Then you said this...

"As someone who never enrolled in the military and never really done extensive volunteer work, I wish that I had been forced into it"

-No one forced you not to volunteer

-Forced into volunteering? (think about that one)

-You don't wish you were forced into killing people in a war. You are lying about this wish.

-You wish other kids should be forced to fight and kill and be killed, then you say "Imagine how much good it would do..."

Rasputin,

If you want to know how "how much good it would do" to be forced into a war, you don't have to use your imagination; there are many members here who can indulge you. U2U a member called dooper, or just read some of his posts if you want to see what being forced to fight war can do to a person. dooper won't hold anything back either, he's a good source for information on the worst parts about wars.

You could Even ask some of our Iraq veterans who have been stop-loss'd or recalled and sent on several combat tours against their WISHES - they will tell you "how much good it would do" for such a thing to be forced onto our kids.

Is this the beginning of a Nationalized Workforce in other words do the job we tell you to do and you have no choice? Yes I understand this is working with the military for 2 years and you more then likely will be assigned a specific job. My question what is the real agenda?

Visiting Mainland China for a month in 1989 right before the Tiananmen Square incident I had the pleasure of meeting with a student studying English. I asked her, do you have a job and she said yes. My next question was, where do you work and her answer, in an electronics factory making radios. I asked her if you wanted to change jobs in your company could you do so, her answer, no. I asked her another question, if you wanted to go to another company and work for that company could you do so, and her answer was no. Once on a particular job she said, this would always be your job.

Now I am sure things have changed in China since capitalism merged with communism. I would call it capitalmunism. I do not trust this present administration in the U.S. because their agenda is socialism and you guessed right communism. Taking apart our free enterprise capitalistic society piece by piece step by step by legislating We The People out of business. Are We The People or are We The Sheeple?

Defense civilian employees who participate in the expeditionary program shall be treated with high regard as an indication of the department’s respect for those who serve expeditionary requirements.

Expeditionary program participants’ service and experience shall be valued, respected and recognized as career-enhancing.

Participants who meet program requirements would be eligible to receive the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism.

Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism? These medals will be like those Lance Armstrong braclets at first. People will wear them all the time because they will be recognized heros. Soon everyone will want one.

I see this as a way to use veterans.

Many DOD employees are ex military personal.

Once they have DONE there time why should the government be able to draft them as civilians to do duty in war zones.

I think congress should add at least 1 idem to any rules like this for DOD civilians.

Make any disabilities accrued during this duty service connected for veterans.

That's because Peonage, Slavery, and Involuntary Servitude were abolished by the Constitutional Amendment. Compulsory Service in the Invasion of a foreign country on the pretext of an unnamed, unseen, unknown enemy, when border efense id the most ethical, economic, and wisest choice available.

Financial Collapse of the Western Nations will lead to riots, the more people fight the better off the wealthiest 15+ families will be. They will take the survivors and rebuild them under a Dictatorship one world government, likely housed in Australia, why else build a multi Billion dollar Parliament and Rockefeller's 20 Multi Million dollar homes in Caberra National Park where it is illegal to build homes. It is only a country of 18 million fairly non revolutionist minded people. It'd be the best place to locate. Then with Pine Gap's 5 mile tunnel for Submarine Access and ELF Communications, and of Course, the several hundred million dollar Deacon Center with it's databases collecting data from all the phones and systems in Australia, plus the central connections which link it to all the databases throughout America and the World collecting data on everyone and everything, around the clock. With overriding trap programs that leave no signature, the Deacon Worm they are alleging, is really the PROMIS software, such as that used to overide the FAA on 9/11 and leave the ghost Flight 11 on the screen from the Air Forces War Games that morning, desopite the games being terminated as soon as the crisis hit, so that the FAA thought the Flight was part of the simulation until it was too late. The PROMIS software was attached to the Command Center that Rumsfield was rushed to just before the Ghost Flight 11 appeared on the FAA screens. At the same time as the real flight had made impact on the Tower.

Educate Yourself before rushing other people's kid's off to die for the wealthy few at the behest of the diseducated profittering power mongering many.

The only reason people love capitalism more than wealth is the hope that they to can be successful enough to manipulate the world, oops, I mean make a difference. Even if they don't plan on being wealthy, they are either poor and want comforts in life, or, rich and don't want to give up their luxeries, or, middle class, and would prefer luxury to comfort, and cling to the status quo, because they choose comfort over poverty. People really make me sick sometimes.

Oh well, they deserve everything they get. No one was ever raped or murdered that didn't see the signs first.

Why is it that a culture who has no faith in their country, and no faith on the media, and only practice their beliefs on church day, buy every ounce about what you are told about your enemy? Is it possible, that a Religious School of thought, one of thirty, the violent one, the Taliban. Or, Al Quaeda, a group trained and betrayed by the very people they attacked. Might have a legitimate axe to grind. The attacked the World Trade Center. Why? Who were they after? Innocent people? Well, too bad for them, only wealthy financiers and governments and businesses have any business at or with the WTC. The staff, well, sucks, but, could be they were collateral damage. Hey, if I can allow collateral damage for a recognized militant force like the ARMY, etc. I can allow it for an unofficial one. If it helps me to reason out just why they did it.

Hey! Does anyone remember the NY Times article on 9/11 or 12 of 2001. A small one, but, it was about Saddam's rival to the Presidency. Yeah! Turns out, according to the Time's this guy had a real chance at beating Saddam. Turns out, to that guy's poor luck, that he was on the exact floor at the exact time that the first plane hit. Imagine that. He saw the nose come right at him before he died.

Hmmm. I'd almost say that was pretty good piloting for a pilot who could not take off or land right, but, could happen to make such a lucky shot at the building. Hmmm. Almost as convenient as the inexperienced pilot who pulled a sharp turn at the Pentagon to happen to take out an empty section under renovation, without slowing down, wow an inexperienced pilot pulled off a U-Turn at over 200 miles per hour. Too bad for him, he didn't just hit the first available wall, which, strange enough is where all the staff from the renovated section were, along with it's current occupants.
If I were on a Conspiracy Theory Site, I'd say....

And some people want to elect other people's children to become potential targets, as opposed to those who volunteer to be mercenaries for hire, oops, I mean soldiers. Simply because they don't agree with their lifestyle choices. Choices, I and my family before me and my family now, and my family on into the future, fought, fight, and continue to fight for them to make. Not so they could be dictated 2

Notice how I used the word 'suggest'

*When someone 'commands' you, it is not a suggestion.

I have made a suggestion, which only a fool would interpret as a 'command'.

Nice try!

Cheers!

Um...they have you sign up for 2 years and go over-seas for military missions...

Is that not the same as the army (minus the years spent overseas or in service)?

Seems like they are avoiding using the words "draft" to me...

The name does not make it sound benevolent at all.
