B. EMPLOYMENT-BASED IMMIGRANTS: A total of 140,000 immigrant visas are available annually for employment-based (E) applicants. Foreign nationals who fall under this category are divided into five preference groups:

H-1B Work Visa General Information: The H-1B Visa enables professionals in "Specialty Occupations" to make a valuable contribution to the American economy. A maximum of 65,000 H-1B Visas are issued every year. The H-1B Visa is issued for up to three years but may be extended. This provides a maximum stay of six years. The H1-B Visa holder can apply for a Green Card if a company wants to sponsor his/her application.

this just doesn't sit too well with me consideration the numbers of job losses to date and continue to rise: look at this

USCIS Will Begin Accepting H1-B Visa Applications on April 1, 2008 USCIS will begin accepting H1-B visa applications for the 2009 fiscal year on April 1, 2008. It is very likely that USCIS will reach its H1-B cap for the 2009 fiscal year very soon after April 1, 2008. Last year, USCIS reached its H1-B visa quota in just one (1) day.

Through the H1-B visa program, U.S. employers can hire highly educated foreign professional workers for “specialty occupations.” These workers need to have at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent in the field of specialty. H1-B visa holders can stay in the United States for up to six (6) years.

H1-B visas are limited to 65,000 per year. However the following exemptions are not included in this H1-B cap: 1) extensions for current H1-B workers; 2) concurrent employment in a second H1-B position; 3) petitions which are amended; 4) petitions for new employment at exempt organizations such as a nonprofit research organization, a higher education institution or an affiliated non-profit entity and 5) 20000 H1-B visas for graduates of U.S. colleges who have earned a Master’s degree or higher.

A small number compared to the millions that are here illegally,

Actually, visas are used as a ploy to stay illegally as well.

According to a recent study, 45 percent of illegal immigrants came here on a legal visa, and then overstayed that visa.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Furthermore, the 140,000 is a minimum, not maximum.

The Immigration and Nationality Act provides a yearly minimum of 140,000 employment-based immigrant visas which are divided into five preference categories

Tourist visas not work permits- I think you would be surprised how small that amount is that overstay there work permit as work permits are pretty much company specific. But anybody who is here illegally including overstaying their visas (which makes them illegal). Still not 20% of those that enter illegally into the USA.

You need to add another zero to that baby. Its so much more higher than what they are reporting it isn't funny. I.E. you don't get to see how many of the true visas go to people working for the gov in this country.

Here in the tourist town, Myrtle Beach SC, every year 1,000's of
east Europeans and Russians get a 6-9month work visa,

they hire on in work camp groups, doing service industry jobs like
motel/hotel maids & cleaning,
waitresses for the thousdands of restaurants here,
they even swipe the UPC labels at the grocery stores, cashiers...

a few suppliment their contracted work (which allowed the Visa)
with off-duty escort stuff, but mainly they all get room-&-board
for the summer & must return home if they get fired or whatever...
i look at it all as like being an indentured servant, & the big guys
that set up the visas & the businesses that hire the east europeans
as the money makers in the deal.

but, i'm not an insider, so i can't provide legal testimony !

something to ponder...

One of the problems with this is when US companies fire the current work force and bring in cheaper replacements using these visas.

There was a huge stink here in FL a bit ago about what Nielsen was doing.

Tampa Bay - Nielsen Layoffs

Yet last year, Nielsen let go 240 Tampa-area employees, including many in Oldsmar. Now the company — formerly known as Nielsen Media Research — says the Oldsmar location is losing another 110 positions.

That work has been outsourced to India-based Tata Consultancy Services. Tata, one of the world's largest providers of consulting and outsourcing services, has brought in its own workers from India.

There have been more layoffs since this article - all replaced with contractors from India at a cheaper rate.

It isn't a case of having to look outside the US for special skills. They had skilled people doing the jobs. They just fired them and replaced them with cheaper labor from outside the US.

well, this pisses me off. i'm hungry! this is absolutely the pits! we have no manufacturing jobs, all of our agricultural jobs have been outsourced to third world countries and because monsanto has all the seeds, i am unable to grow decent foods from hybrid veggies/fruits seeds. now, one must have several jobs to put food on the table and because of the employment visas what little employment opportunities left in this forsaken country goes to foreigners.

i suppose when american's are hungry enough some action will be taken.
