Brazilian amputee model and Miss World finalist Mariana Bridi dies at 20

Brazilian model Mariana Bridi da Costa, whose hands and feet were amputated in a bid to save her from a deadly and little-known illness, died early Saturday, two friends of the model told CNN. She was 20.

''Unfortunately Mari couldn't resist any longer. She passed away at 3 a.m. today,'' Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil, said in an e-mail to CNN.

Da Costa had been in an induced coma suffering from necrosis, caused by septicemia. Triggered by a bacterial infection, septicemia causes insufficient blood flow, which leads to organ failure.

Doctors were forced to amputate both her hands and feet and later extract part of her stomach and both kidneys as the disease took over.

Da Costa's fiance, Thiago Simoes, said she first sought medical help after feeling ill December 30. Hospital officials said she was transferred to Dorio Silva Hospital in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo on January 3 in ''septic shock,'' a serious medical condition caused by an inflammation.

Doctors first diagnosed da Costa as suffering a urinary tract infection. By the time the infection was detected, it had developed into septicemia. Doctors decided to amputate first her hands and then her feet after the condition reduced the amount of oxygen being delivered to her limbs.

A very sad story that I first heard of yesterday. My girlfriend told me she suffered a very rare illness that forced doctors to amputate her hands and feet to eventually pass away days later.
