Not sure where to put this but...

Having just started life at what seems the crossroads of the "good" times and the coming uncertainty, I keep thinking what life will be like for me and others younger than I. I know worrying accomplishes nothing, and I try to focus on the little things that make my life somewhat happy, but thinking about economic collapse, finishing my degree (haha I graduate in 2012...) me and my girlfriends future (who I intend to marry someday) Its all so depressing and frustrating. All I want to do is live free and happy, travel, and see the world, raise a family and find some sort of fulfillment. But the way things look now, it might not turn out like that. MY question is, with all that hanging in the imminent future, what am I and people like me supposed to do? Any insight from older wiser members will be appreciated, the average... well I better not say... will not be.

Thanks.

I am probably around your age. I see hard times coming, so I educate myself as much as i can. This not only pertains to academics (half of the stuff we learn is probably crap anyway) but also survival.

The future looks uncertain, but it is up to us to fight for it too. The best advice i can give you from one young man to another is to just prepare.
Personally, i am preparing and waiting for the green flag for a revolution. I am too much of a coward to start one i will admit it, but once it starts and i can see that i am not alone, then it will be the time.

You pick your goal, good times or bad, and every day you take a measure of what you did to reach that goal.

Keep your eye on the horizon, and keep moving in that direction.

Many people when they get a compass make the mistake of trying to walk with it. Stop, pick your direction, spot the farthest thing you can see, and then make for it, while your compass stays in your pocket.

When you reach that point, you shoot another line.

That's life.

But if your compass is varied every step of the way, you'll miss your mark by miles.

Good luck.

I feel the same way you do, and to be honest I see very dark times ahead in the future. I stopped worrying about every day mundane things and started focusing on learning as much as I can. I've taken up martial arts, I've been studying alot on survival on all circumstances. I'm definately planning on enrolling into a paramedic course, because having that kind of medical knowledge would be essential in any survival situation.

My friends all ask me why I don't own a TV or an XBOX360 and why I waste so much time reading useless books and taking useless courses...

But somedays I find myself hoping, that maybe, just maybe I would be able to raise a family of my own in my own house. That everything will be normal and I could live a normal, happy life. But the way things have been going in the world lately, I just don't see that happening. I can honestly picture myself living in a shack made of sticks and twigs in the middle of a forest with my girlfriend and family, more than I can see owning a home of my own...

Simple.

"Live free and happy, travel, and see the world, raise a family and find some sort of fulfillment" until something real prevents you from doing so-- and even then, fight like hell to... "Live free and happy, travel, and see the world, raise a family and find some sort of fulfillment."

Very good advice there dooper. I was just going to say like Tom Hanks did in cast away. Get up each morning and breath , you never know what the tide might bring in for you. When I was in high school (am 45 now) I always worried that the US and USSR were going to just blow up the whole world with nuclear bombs. Believe me we even did the little exercises in grade school: stop , drop and cover......it was a real concern and I had thoughts same as you, however all that worrying never helped or changed a thing. What dooper said plus try yer best to be prepared and keep your eyes open. You have to keep moving on.

Never think you have "everything figured out"..... be humble and grateful. Think of yourself as a fan...life can and will throw a steaming pile of dog sh@t at you. Embrace the pain and you will not forget to be thankful.

Live your life. Don't focus on the failures look at them only long enough to learn what you did wrong. Surround yourself with positive people and keep moving forward. Don’t think anymore than what you have to about the dark future. As was said earlier educate yourself and make a plan and stick to it until it is accomplished. Then start over with a new plan. Mainly keep the negative at bay and stick to the positives. Learn from your mistakes and always move forward.

I'm a lot younger than most, maybe all on this site (15, hah!). I'm not stupid to what's going down in the world but I'm not into crazy conspiracies where they make it look just right so it seems true (Illuminati, wtf?). I am hoping that I can actually graduate high school and college but I cant help but expect things are going to be looking far worse than they already are in the near future. It's really hard to fight that doomsday mentality by the way especially in adolescence (damn that adolescence) considering how grim it looks at this point. I share the same view as you, what the heck am I gonna do? Living in Alaska may help if all goes to heck but then we don't get imports and then we all turn into hungry savages. Very scary... So yeah all we can do is hope that the U.S will pull through under Obama (HOPE!!!). But that is really it for now. As for me for now, my normal boring high school life is all I care about. Can't focus on the bigger, more untouchable issues no matter how prominent they are.
For you, just aim for your goal as every one else has said until something gets in the way, then just work around that something and so on and so forth.

Cheers!

From an old fart like me I can honestly say to live your life to the fullest. My father said something that stuck in my brain ever since, he said "you are going to have some good days and you are going to have some bad days", and that stuck to me thru my life. every time I have one of those days I just think back to what he said.

Also get out and see the world, try to talk to others people in other parts of the world, they are just like us. I had the honor of talking to a German that was a prisoner during WW2 and how he came to know the english language. when he was a prisoner, he was shipped to N.C. until after the war.

So you see getting out and seeing the world and talking to other people is a Plus.

Yes, the economy might get worse, we migth get a new currency or even a new union formed but they have all happened before infront of our eyes in Europe and people barely felt it.

Water shapes its course according to the nature
of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works
out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing.- Sun Tzu

its all relative bro, you gotta focus on the here and now. Be like water, adapt to what comes at you as it comes at you. In my personal opinion, and how i live life, yeah its ok to set flexible long term goals, but they are called long term for a reason, you are in the here and now, not two, three years from now.
let the world throw at you what it will, if you get knocked down, get up again (chumbawumba anyone
l: ) Just be yourself, and have faith in the fact that nothing can keep you down. Life is a learning process, and every second is a classroom, learn from it.

and in my mind,,,that's still young---sort of

and i look so forward to one day have children,,, i adore my nieces and can only imagine the bond when it's your own

but many days i think and contemplate,,,with the way our world is going,,, do i want to bring a child into this world,,, into a life of pure misery and possible craziness????

is that fair to my child,,, when i know the hardships and suffering they may endure

a tough question,,,for me at least,,,that i think about quite often

If it wasn't this, it would be something else.
Don't stew about it. Won't help.
Even if everything went in the crapper you'd still get up every day and do something. Just keep on doing the best you can.
That's all life really is.
