As mentioned, Mythbusters did an episode on this and concluded that the brace position is NOT designed to kill you, but help you. Here is the link to their findings...

Mythbusters - Brace Position

If a plane has a failure at high altitude to the point the pilot has no control of the plane, there would likely be no survivors. In fact, only one person lived through this scenario. That person was in the last row at the tail of the plane. She was protected by the structure of the rear wing, tail fin, and smaller radius of the fuselage. Still, she was very lucky! She should not have survived considering the speed at impact.

Most planes crash on takeoff or landing. In these cases, a vast majority of the survivors are seated behind the main wings. Also, the survivor rate increases proportionally as you move to the rear of the plane.

So,,,, I guess the moral of this story is; Save your money and live.

Have we been watching Fight Club lately. Seems your theory matches the theory Brad Pitt talks about.

The episode of Mythbusters was fairly good too, but basically the Brace position is designed to lesten the impact. But it doesnt do much for stopping broken legs which stops you from being able to reach an exit.

As mentioned, typically 80% die from smoke inhalation and fire. I think protect the legs as priority, so squat on the seat or similar.
