Israeli ground troops invade Gaza to halt rockets

news.yahoo.com

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Thousands of Israeli troops backed by columns of tanks and helicopter gunships launched a ground offensive in Gaza on Saturday night, with officials saying they expected a lengthy fight in the densely populated territory after eight days of punishing airstrikes failed to halt militant rocket attacks on Israel.

The incursion set off fierce clashes with Palestinian militants and Gaza's Hamas rulers vowed the coastal strip would be a "graveyard" for Israelis forces.

"This will not be easy and it will not be short," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on national television about two hours after ground troops moved in.

Army ambulances were seen bringing Israeli wounded to a hospital in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. The military said a total of 30 soldiers were injured in the opening hours of the offensive along with "dozens" of militants

Well boots on the ground people! I hope that this conflict can come to a swift end without the loss of massive amounts of civilian lives, Given the amount of troope that Isareal went in with. All involved in in my thoughts and prayers, especially the innocent people that had nowhere to run to, lets hope Israel keeps them in mind to as they finalize their assualt.

Israel is taking a risk by wading into intense urban warfare in densely populated Gaza that could exact a much higher toll on both sides and among civilians.

I hope too that Israel does think twice before they go in to Hammas. I hope they keep the civilians in mind before they strike.

Since it is possible to launch a "rocket" from the back of a pick-up truck and a mortar from the backseat of a car, just how do the Israelis intend to stop Hamas from launching rockets and mortars (as long as their supply holds out)?

They've already invaded the Gaza. Do they now intend to conduct a "house to house, car by car" search of the entire Gaza Strip?

Is this the start of a years-long occupation of the Gaza by Israel?

Once again, the fuse to the powder-keg has been re-lit.

The world sits with its collective fingers in its ears.

This thread was actually opened first.
The other one should be closed.
Ok im commenting here because this was opened first.

Of course Israel will take care to not hurt civilians.
But to say 0 civilians will die is silly.
They are always killed in wars.
But from the beginning of this Israel has taken even more care and time that it actually had to, in order to minimize civilian casualties.
Whether you hate or like Israel is irrelevant.
They are a country, a democracy, like any other, and are allowed to defend themselves.
It wouldn't matter if Hamas was firing bottle rockets at them.
The fact they are doing acts of aggression means any country has a right to defend itself and stop it from happening again.
And that's what Israel is doing.
The protests about this are just antisemitic or religious rhetoric or people trying to get attention and have absolutely nothing to do with the reality of the situation.
There is Muslims, and Arabs and Christians, IN the Israeli army fighting in this.

Well as of now there is 27 civilian casualties and counting, to me thats too many and Israel is content with the civilian deathtoll riseing they don't care about anything but their cause.
