Dozens die in New Year's club fire in Bangkok

www.msnbc.msn.com

BANGKOK - A fire raced through a two-story nightclub packed with hundreds of well-heeled New Year's revelers early Thursday, killing at least 59 people as they stampeded to escape the flames, officials said. More than 200 were injured.

The cause of the fire in a Bangkok entertainment district was under investigation but several witnesses said a fireworks display during the New Year's countdown ignited the blaze.

I dont know how many of these it takes for owners and patrons to smarten up. I lay the blame on both. The owners need to enforce any kind of safety regulations. And the patrons should be smart enough to see danger.

and when are people going to understand that stampeding out of a building leads to more problems, and will more than likely put you at more risk, not less.

59 people... what a shame

A very scary and tragic event. I have been to this club a few times in the past. I didn't like it because of it's layout - it was packed with people and tables, there were few exits, and the stairs to the upstairs balcony area were extremely narrow and steep.

If there can be anything positive to say, it's that this will hopefully cause regulations to be created and/or enforced more strictly. Things like this are just so unnecessary, and a prime example of when the Thai people's laid-back attitude (which is usually a positive trait) can have terrible consequences in the long term. Some things really should be taken seriously.
