I find it funny how the geologist are now stating that we dont have anything to worry about yet in 2005 ( very short time in geology) they had this to say.

Keep in mind what we are seeing today is worse then what they saw in 2005.

www.msnbc.msn.com...

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. - The Yellowstone caldera has been classified a high threat for volcanic eruption, according to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Yellowstone ranks 21st most dangerous of the 169 volcano centers in the United States, according to the Geological Survey's first-ever comprehensive review of the nation's volcanoes.

Kilauea in Hawaii received the highest overall threat score followed by Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington, Mount Hood in Oregon and Mount Shasta in California. Kilauea has been erupting since 1983. Mount St. Helens, which erupted catastrophically in 1980, began venting again in 2004.

Those volcanoes fall within the very high threat group, which includes 18 systems. Yellowstone is classified with 36 others as high threat.

Recurring earthquake swarms, swelling and falling ground, and changes in hydrothermal features are cited in the report as evidence of unrest at Yellowstone.

The report calls for better monitoring of the 55 volcanoes in the very high and high threat categories to track seismic activity, ground bulging, gas emissions and hydrologic changes.

University of Utah geology professor Robert Smith, who monitors earthquakes and volcanic activity in Yellowstone, said more real-time monitoring should be helpful. "We've really been stressing over the last couple of years that the USGS should consider hazards as a very high priority in their future," he said. "We need to get the public's confidence and the perception that we're doing it right."

The university has joined the Geological Survey and Yellowstone National Park in creating the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, which uses ground-based instruments throughout the region and satellite data to monitor volcanic and earthquake unrest in the world's first national park.

The USGS report recognizes Yellowstone as an unusual hazard because of the millions of people who visit the park and walk amid features created by North America's largest volcanic system, Smith said, a status he has been advocating for years.

Smith does not paint the devastating picture portrayed in a recent TV docudrama but said smaller threats exist. For example, a lower-scale hydrothermal blast could scald tourists strolling along boardwalks.

Emissions of toxic gases from the park's geothermal features also pose a threat. Five bison dropped dead last year after inhaling poisonous gases trapped near the ground due to cold, calm weather near Norris Geyser Basin.

Stepped up monitoring and a new 24-hour watch office could lead to more timely warnings and help avoid human catastrophes at Yellowstone and nationally, according to the USGS.

Did I mention they keep talking just like the scientists in supervolcano before it blew up....

i dont agree

when i found out that yellowstone is a huge volcano and told my mother about and my fear that it would blow its cork soon , she told me not to worry because the geysers and stream vents of YS help to releave the overall pressure of the magma chamber .
ill take her word for it.

The geysers do not relieve anything, they have to do with water in the region being heated up by the magma. Its not going to stop a volcano from blowing. Its a by product. Your mother trying to do what all good mothers do, keep you from worrying. No offense but my moma said really doesnt belong here.

These are the current rivers and streams currently experiencing an increased flow based on historical data in the general area. These spikes look extremely abnormal to me. Something to watch in the next day or so....But the data could be corrupted, or it is icing over. Very interesting.

Madison River near West Yellowstone MT

Yellowstone River at Yellowstone Lk Outlet YNP

NORTH FORK SHOSHONE RIVER AT WAPITI, WY

CHEYENNE RIVER NR DULL CENTER, WY

CROW CREEK AT 19TH
STREET, AT CHEYENNE, WY

PINE CREEK ABOVE FREMONT LAKE, WY

BEAR RIVER BLW SMITHS FORK, NR COKEVILLE, WY

SNAKE RIVER AT MOOSE, WY

Keep in mind these are all near the Tetons, Yellowstone, and mostly near the caldera.

I am finding the readings on GEE for LKWY to be very odd as compaired to the recent reading we have been watching
BHE barely positive mostly negative read
BHN totally negative
BHZ positive to 4 no dipps going negative

From the looks of it its doing a steady yet mild vertical shake that isnt effecting the BHN or BHE.. any thoughts?

Yellowstone lake just had a 2.0 a few minutes ago. Anyone on GEE shoulda seen that. Creek went offline for a second or there was some kind of data lag right after.

They corrupted the data by setting the magnification to high. Look along the bottom of the pick in the main window on the link at the bottom of the graph you can see where someone set it to 3000 @ blah blah
You can kind of see that there are quakes on it in the first one.

I just want to remind everyone of the minute amounts of movement we are talking about, hopefully to add a little perspective.

GEE plots in microns/sec. Ok now 1 micron, also known as a micrometer, is 1 millionth of a meter, and that equals 1/1000 th of a MILLIMETER. You know how small that is? We are talking about specs of dust on a pinhead.

Someone posted a while back a pic where the scales were at 35,000 microns. Wow, right? Well, 35,000 microns only equals 35 millimeters, which is about an inch and a half. It really makes me wonder how exaggerated movies like "Earthquake" were with movements of over 3 feet or more! Bah! I call bogus.

But on the other hand, when I was in Costa Rica, I was in a 3.4 quake, but was very very close to the epicenter. I was already on the ground because I was playing soccer as goalie with my uncle, and had just caught the ball in a diving save. What I witnessed next was scary for sure. I heard the "train" sound, and since I was on the ground, looked out across the field and literally saw waves, just like water does, coming towards us in the ground!

I was swirled around a bit, and the movement felt like I was moved in a circle of about 6" or so. Hard to tell. So obviously where you are, and where the sensors are relative to the hypocenter (the actual center of the quake underground, as epicenter refers to the place on the surface closest to the hypocenter), has a very major effect on the amount of ground movement experienced by either you or the sensor.

You talking about the people commenting about it? Not sure what you mean. I never trust news sites, I mean they interview the scientist etc... He doesnt wanna lose his job or create mass panic so he wont say anything bad. Main stream media is kinda pressed the same way.

If they tryed to air news that would create panic they will be stopped. My moms a reporter I know a little about it. Juicy things dont get picked up by the AP because everyone has a boss. Also it would be a national security issue to post something that would cause mass panic.

Just wouldnt happen, in the movie supervolcano I posted a link to a few pages back(its on youtube) you get a feel for what kind of preasure the scientist would be under trying to release that kind of news. Also what if you release and nothing happens? Evacuate a few million people for a week or two for nothing? Have rioting and people cleaning out the shelves at stores and fighting over food for nothing?

The subject gets pretty deep, thats why I know I cant trust those in charge for an early warning. You kinda got to take that into your own hands. I recomend that movie though its about Yellowstone.
