This thread goes out to all the ATSers across the drink. After reading online stories and watching Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International. I was wandering if the beliefs in the nature spirits are as relevant now as they used to be. I have red stories that people would not cut certain trees down because they were said to be fairy trees, or people not building houses in certain areas that were thought to be fairy paths. Like I said was merely wandering if it is still a strong belief. All comments welcomed.

Thank you

If even one person adheres strongly to the belief, it is just that, alive and well.

While I agree it only takes one persons belief to make it "real" to them. I was just wandering if it was out dated and only a few still believed. Thanks for the post.

Well there is strong anecdotal support for the proposition that there is something objectively weird at the bottom of these "beliefs".

Have a read of Jacques Vallee's works like "Passport to Magonia" or "Dimensions" . He goes over a lot of european folkloric tradition and does a lot of quoting of earlier field research on the topic - then he starts looking at the similarities between the incidents reported in folklore with those reported in UFO case studies (in particular the characteristics and behaviour of the beings/operators/occupants.)

It is very interesting particularly when placed into the context of the what we perceive as the UFO phenomena.

hmm that's why I never figured that out I didn't think ghosst hunters did things on gnomes and the like. I've seen it a couple times too but never anything "fantasy"-like on the show. Too bad cause all those tales must have come from somewhere. I read this book that was so good. forget teh name cause i lent it out and never got it back. it was about how the power of a god (well it wasn't about that but it was a cool story alround) is only as large as the amnt. of ppl that believe in him. Gods like zeus and all that were being overtaken by the new Gods (computers, technology, porn, etc). It was a chilling and almost sad tale how slowly but surely the mighty zues fell. I think this kind of relates to your post in that the belief s"hapes reality" outlook might not be so far off.

I'm an avid ghost hunter watcher, and i have not once seen/heard/smelled anything of the fairy or gnome field. But i don't think that was the reason it was brought up, i guess you mentioned GH and GHI cause it influenced the idea upon you or something, that's what it does for me. I don't quite believe in the fairy/gnome thing (though i do WISH they were real)

Screamo, I believe it was on the first few episodes when the GH crew went to Ireland and had Barry with them and he would talk of the nature spirits like the faries. They also have a list of nature spirits on their website.
