I live in the small island of Malta, and last Thursday I find my internet connection down... then once the internet is back up (realllyyy slow) I find on my local news site that a cable linking Malta to Sicily was damaged.

So far nothing seems weird .... however later on news sites reported that this was not the only cable that was damaged...

www.bloomberg.com...

Is one anchor going to damage three cables at one go on the same day?

Maybe the ppl reading this post could make some research and post their opinion

IF the cables are in close proximity and the anchor sides around it can most definately damage anything the anchor comes into contact with.

So calm down, it isnt any terrorist attack. Those terrorists wont bother with a few cables, they are into killing people, not killing packets.

Cheers!!!!

You would have thought a company would space these cables out so far, to give them less of a chance of more than one being damaged in such a way.

Still, seems like it was nothing suspicious or dramatic, just an accident.

But, about the terrorist suspicion, they don't only kill people you know. They do other things to cause disruption and fear. This could very well have been deliberate, because it is such an easy target and causes a lot of problems.

If it had been, I'm sure they'd be milking it for news by now. The PTB would love the opportunity to remind us all that removing freedoms is for our own protection.

wow this is fishy indeed!

Last time something like this happened was when Iran was disconnected, also multiple cables.

It is possible now to hook up a device to an underwater optic line to get access to the info streams.

Go figure...

Amazingly enough, yes this was a true outage caused by cuts in the cable due to an anchor being dragged. I work for AT&T Business services and this caused some major issues for some of the customers we have in the area. Its all well documented as to how it happened and the progress of the repairs. They are still trying to repair the damage but most of the traffic has been rerouted through other cables, thats why your connection is so slow.

Its not hard to believe that the cables where cut by an anchor. My hub and I fish the San Fransico bay for shark and sturgeon alot during the winter months. They have cables all over the place and we have lost more than one fishing set up by getting stuck on them. They are incased in a rubber type pipe, not a hard plastic one so that when we have earthquakes they can move around and not break.
