www.dailyexpress.co.uk...

ROAD safety chiefs in China have stopped speeding drivers in their tracks with bizarre 3D road markings.

Traditional zebra crossings have been scrapped and replaced with colourful, psychedelic images of logs of wood on the road in Taizhou, in the centre of the country.

crackin idea think it should be used more around the world, would definitely slow down drivers

yeah until drivers get used to it and eventually take as much notice of it as a traditional zebra crossing.

Kinda reminds me of when they stopped using cattle grids in the country side and simply started painting lines in the road - the animals would not cross the lines thinking it was a real cattle grid... I used to think 'Dumb animals!' Now I can think 'Dumb drivers!'.

Haha what a funny idea. It would ar least make a street look a little bit more colourful. As for stopping drivers, I think not.

That just looks too weird and cool all at once. I can't figure out how they do that. I wonder how it works at night, in bad weather; etc.
I could almost seeing it causing accidents at first because it looks like you couldn't even drive over it. Someone, like me for instance, would probably come to a full stop before figuring it out;

The problems worsen when the drivers become complacent.
"Oh that's just one of those freaky drawings... I'm going to keep moving....."
Then *CRASH* when the real thing pops up.

Haha that would be a funny sight, if all the drivers got confused and tried to drive over the pavement around it.

Atlantican, I think people would become complacent pretty quickly, and people wont 'Stand out' as much on a colourful crossing so are probably less likely to be noticed by a driver.

Just to show folks the designs from the above article...

Crazy!

Doesn't say if they're reflective paint and also visible at night though. And the illusion of 3D is from the camera angle? I wonder how they look from a drivers perspective?

It won't be long before some poor schmuck gets run over because the driver was staring at the 'obstruction' on the road.

What about real obstructions? - there is a risk of complacency.

*This might seem 'neat and 'cool' and 'unique', but it is of no benefit at all and possibly might make things worse.

I say, stick with the existing, tried-and-true system.

Edit: Leave it to the Communist Scum to come up with something so stupid. It is a crime to criticize these road marking in China; unless you fill out the form.

Simple solution:

Randomly replace the painted "logs" with real ones painted to look like fake ones. Just for a few hours a day, at random locations around the city. That'll keep people on their toes.

(there's a reason I'll never be in charge of urban planning)
