This post is not intended to discredit the global warming advocates as I agree that an increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere during peak solar activity will increase surface temperature. Global warming Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate carrying out global warming research have recently predicted that average global temperatures could increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C by the year 2100.
Though we are in a period of low solar activity.
Predicting solar cycle 24 is like the webbot, always having the date pushed forward, still awaiting the big event!
Still no sunspots!
The magnetosphere is weakening allowing in more cosmic rays the ionosphere is lower creating more clouds and lower temperatures.
Foreboding the next ice age. An extended period of low solar activity would be a serious concern. Glaciation can happen quickly, the required decline in global temperature is about 12C to reach the full glaciation experienced during the maunder minimum. Based on the recent global cooling trend it can happen within 20 years.
With the time frame indicated severe weather, record low temperatures, extended snowfall ice and blizzards, crop failure due to frost, wind and unseasonal rain, will become increasingly frequent in a short period of time (well before full glaciation). We have governments around the world declaring climate change is a matter of National Security Threat. Joined by a 52 country UN debate, stating that climate change is an issue which threatens the peace and security of the whole planet.
Another year without solar activity is another year closer to an ice age how long can we wait before we declare that the sun has gone into an extended period of inactivity? In such an event we would have limited time as a global community to take the necessary action to avoid a National Security Threat?

Still no sunspots? - How long can we wait?

An ice age cometh? - National Security Threat?

There is global warming caused by humans? LOL...the earth warms and cools over milenia, humans are so tiny on this earth it is impossible for us to change the temp in either direction. You cannot see one sign of human civilization from space, no major cities can be seen, even the greatwall of china cannot be seen. Of course this changes at night with lights, but that is not what i am talking about.

C02 is not a pollutant, it cannot hold more heat than water vapor. The sun and our relative position on the galactic plane are what causes changes in temp, not humans.

If you want to worry about something, worry about water pollution, worry about garbage being thrown into streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean. That is something we can fix.

I think the OP is very important.

Unanticipated magnetospheric weakening, combines with unusual solar emissions could spell problems for us on a global scale.

AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HUMAN ACTIVITY. Unless of course there is any truth to the HAARP theories.

Our atmosphere is being plasma charged heavily now. Let's hope the planetary system has a response to lessen the danger. But in any event, our electronics will suffer.

All of this is apart of the significant impact of 6.5 billion inhabitants and a major issue which is being addressed and great progress has been made in the environmental movement.

However lets stick to the thread

Well, what can you do? This is why I laugh at global warming nuts, you cannot do anything to change the earth on a global scale, its impossible. Now you bring the sun into it and that add another layer of impossibility.

What are you going to do, shoot nukes at the sun to generate sun spots?

Charge the atmosphere with ions?

If an ice age is upon us the only thing you can do is move towards the equator and hope we do not experience a total planet freeze over were the earth is covered in ice 1 mile thick at the equator.

What do we do then, buy an SUV and let it run idle?

Ok, so if I understand the paradox of global warming; that being more severe weather globally due to the increase of precipitation gathered from from the oceans, then the lack of solar activity (sun spots) should balance the global warming out a bit right now. If however the sun starts spotting again and solar winds kick things up a notch or two then we really could have some major storms in our future. Is that about it in a nutshell?

When you consider the issue from this perspective, it is just cause for great concern:

sweetness-light.com...

The bleak truth is that, under normal conditions, most of North America and Europe are buried under about 1.5km of ice. This bitterly frigid climate is interrupted occasionally by brief warm interglacials, typically lasting less than 10,000 years.

The interglacial we have enjoyed throughout recorded human history, called the Holocene, began 11,000 years ago, so the ice is overdue. We also know that glaciation can occur quickly: the required decline in global temperature is about 12C and it can happen in 20 years.

The next descent into an ice age is inevitable but may not happen for another 1000 years. On the other hand, it must be noted that the cooling in 2007 was even faster than in typical glacial transitions. If it continued for 20 years, the temperature would be 14C cooler in 2027.

If we are entering a period of extended solar inactivity, then we can expect solar winds to begin wreaking havoc on electrical systems, even disabling them during full glaciation. The implications of this probable scenario are wide and far reaching.

The probable scenario for glaciation will effect the world globally, will we be prepared to act globally? When natural or man made catastrophe befalls a country the globally community offers assistance IMF NGO's UN peacekeepers etc. Nations are free to accept or decline this assistance. ie: Asian tsunami, Burma refused to accept international assistance.
Ultimately the decisions of a country are made as a Nation not globally ie signing the Kyoto accord.
In the event of an extended period of solar inactivity and a probable ice age. will the international community be able to offer assistance?
When the individual Nations comprising the international community are facing a National Security Threat?

The greenhouse effect traps solar radiation heating the earth during a period of active sunpot cycle. When solar cycle 24 does start an active solar cycle we will be back to the warming trend.
However if we are in an innactive solar cycle the magnetosphere is weak galactic cosmic rays enter the ionosphere inducing a cooling trend.

Thanks for your input sad_eyed_lady
The situation may became of great concern before we have time to realise.
MCoG1980 posted a very informative link also were it states 'the changes can happen all within one decade—we might not even see it coming'
"Geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become an astronaut with NASA, said pictures from the US Solar and Heliospheric Observatory also show that there are currently no spots on the sun. He also noted that the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C. This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930'
