What do you still consider music? Is the art released by labels like
Mego or
Tzadik
still music? One of my favourite releases in the style of those labels is the Man'yo album by Yasunao Tone:
"Tone began composing pieces based on overriding the error-correction systems of consumer CD players in order to generate new strings of random
digital sound. A pioneer in the use of prepared CDs, Tone first scratched his own self-described "wounded" scotch tape and pinhole-punctured compact
disc in 1985."
"The listener is treated to about 53 minutes of sculpted noise in which the recorded waveforms of a skipping CD sample source are contoured according
to Chinese symbols derived from Manyo-shu, an 8th century poetry anthology."
Would you consider this music?
