I thought I'd start this thread in order to suggest/hear suggestions of what kind of equipment would be useful should we all suddenly be deprived of all of our home comforts/Water Electricity etc. I've thrown together a list I hope I only ever have to use should I decide to make a documentary with Ray Mears!

1. An Army flint. It doesn't matter if it gets wet, an essential tool for starting a fire in any weather conditions. You can get them ranging from a lifespan of about 3000 strikes to 12000.

2. Magnesium striking Block. Burns at an Incredible temperature and will last for years.

3. Water Purification Tablets. Pretty self explanatory essential Item

4. A Water 'Pura Straw'. You should be able to get one of these from most good Survival shops. Will filter many Liters if water from almost any source.

5. A good hunting Knife. Not only could be used to gut Animals but also to sharpen sticks or strike the flint etc

6. A small tin of natural dust. I saw this one advertised online but I think were all smart enough to know that an empty shoe polish tin filled with similar substance would save the $4 max they think we are stupid enough to pay. Might just come in handy when it's raining. Also remember if it is raining you should only need to scrape a few layers of bark off a tree to come to dryish wood.

7. Hunting Rifle and Ammo (if you live in America where Guns are still (just about) allowed)

8. Crossbow. (If you live in A country where your likely to get 5 years for obtaining a gun) These are incredibly accurate and can fire up to and maybe beyond 240 feet per second.

9. Mess tins. Dirt cheap piece of equipment and they will fold into each other.
Essential for cooking the duck you've just popped with the Crossbow/Rifle

10. Folding spade. Obviously good for digging and you may get one with a saw carved into one side.

11. A tent. I'd suggest at least 2 man. They aren't that expensive but invest wisely.

12. Emergency survival bag. Waterproof, and high visibility (which may work against you in the case of Martial Law being declared!)

13. An Emergency Hypothermia Reflective Space bag. Will keep you warm by reflecting your body heat and would be doubly as good inside the survival bag.

14. Sleeping bag.

15. Binoculars. You need to be able to keep your distance if your stalking animals. Remember always stalk against the wind and never chase a wounded animal. Give it time to stop again before You take another crack at it. Another tip. Stand in the smoke a fire to mask any scents.

16. Candles. Source of light obviously. Emergency heating for cold fingers. Plus you can even eat some candles in an emergency.

17. Wind up torch. This needs no description.

18. Wood stove. To use wood as fuel in cooking. (Not a wooden stove)

19. Knife and fork. To eat the duck you've just popped and cooked.

20. First Aid kit. Include Iodine spray to disinfect open wounds and make sure you have a gauze/bandages plasters etc.

21. NBC suit. Again dirt cheap no more than about £15. Charcoal lined and look like any old set of combos. (Sorry about this one guys I couldn't resist)

That would be all I can think of off the top of my head. Feel free to add to the list with your suggestions. I've linked a couple of useful websites below.

We already have an excellent forum here on ATS:

That said, I do not know what your background is, but some of the information you give below is misleading or wrong, or needs clarification. I am not being a nitpicker, I am just pointing something out. I have spent 14 years in the US Army, including several years in the 10th Mountain Division, and I sure as heck have a lot of training and experience with survival.
