A new report by the National Research Council (NRC) finds that the federal government’s plan for nanotechnology lacks direction, and falls short in assessing the risks posed by nanomaterials.

In its report, released Wednesday, the committee said current U.S. strategy developed by the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) leaves the industry vulnerable to public mistrust

The NRC further criticized the lack of adequate research to ensure the safety of workers, consumers and the environment

One of the greatest Sci-fi authors of our time, Michael Crichton, wrote a book called "Prey" about the potential dangers of unchecked nanotechnology advances. Although not exactly what this article is referring to, that book really opened my eyes as to the potential risks involved in nanotechnology. I personally feel nanotechnology is the wave of the future and will provide the first step in a new age of scientific and medical advances. When carbon nano-tubes were first discovered little did we know what a monumental advancement was made. Now of course we do understand the potential of nanotechnologies, be it nanobots or nano-medical devices. However with most things in life there can be a down side, and that is the potential of environmental contamination from nanotechnology, especially once we have commercially viable self replicating nanobots. Once we reach that stage, the chance of a catastrophic environmental disaster is very real.

Can you not just make a load of nano filings and then release them into the atmosphere, if they're made in the correct way surely they can interrupt the oxygen intake on the blood cells.
