Came across this strange find while wallowing in my Russophilia:

EnglishRussia.com

Can anyone with the proper education in geology or whatever tell me what this is all about?
Is it the "crop circles" of the lakes?

Thank you in advance.

Could it be a man made art installation? In the photos on the link, it looks like the man in the photo is carving the circles out of a frozen pond. It also looked like someone carved the large circle out first. Do you have more photos of these with any eyewitness accounts?

Are there kids near by? Rock throwers... it looks like center piece is an island, and all the other floating circles could easily occur from stones or rocks (golf balls?)on the surface the item on the surface would hold the cold temp in so as a roundish piece was all that did not melt.....
Just guessing, I am outdoors more than in, thats is just my oppinion.

No more info than the link I'm afraid.

Not a one-liner.

I would see these all the time at the base of the waterfalls in the town I grew up in.
We called them "Frozen pizzas".
I believe they are caused by the currents moving in a circular direction in the water.
Nothing weird here.

I am likewise in agreement with AD on this.

If you look to the left of the picture there seems to be an inlet of water flow. judging from the shape of the pond and the ice formed that would make the most sense. Just on a guess, I would say that the outlet would be on the right off screen from the picture.

Ok, thanks.

Mystery- solved.

Yeah, it's a circular water flow. You can only spin ice chunks so often until all the edges have been smoothed out and they become circular.

Nothing mystical really, just rotating ice due to a circulating water flow.

But it is cool to look at!
