I went to turn on my trusty old 360 and she finally kicked the bucket. I have had it since the launch so it is out of warranty now. I actually thought it was some sort of super xbox, impervious to the red ring of death.... but no, it was mortal after all.

Now I am in the midst of trying to repair it myself. Whoa Nellie.... I didn't realize quite what I was undertaking. My 360 is in about 100 different pieces in my office right now. Tomorrow I need to drill some holes and hope for the best.

Has anyone here successfully repaired their RROD on their own?

Actually it may not have been out of warrenty. Microsoft extended all warrenties because even they admit its a piece of junk that will break. Unlike the PS3 and original Xbox. My OXbox is still going strong and its years old. But now that you tore it apart I doubt they'd touch it.

With each passing day I grow more and more thankful that I passed on the 360 and waiting patiently for the PS3.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Some thing we agree on! Games bringing people together. Together to shoot, maim, and kill in a virtual world lol. Unless you have a 360, then you just have a paperweight. Note of interest, the Chicago Fire was not started by a cow kicking a lamp over. It was started by a 360 sent back in time by Bill Gates that then overheated and burst in to flames.

a red ring!! dang it..

call em and talk, it cant hurt, see if theres an extention on the warranty (didnt it go to three years?)

if you do get fed up and can afford to make the switch to ps3 i would suggest it.

I may be the only guy that is in my early thirties and doesnt have an XBOX 360 or PS3..I was told that maybe playing video games would mellow me out a little...I think I want one!!!

It is relaxing until it dies an unexpected death on you.

And it is out of warranty, I have had it over 3 years now.

My buddy has been through 3 so far...now on his 4th 360. All due to the dreaded RROD. Supposedly the latest edition to come out after the Halo model were all red ring proof but nope.

Always get that extended warranty is my best advice. I have had mine for over 1 yr with no probs yet (knock on wood).

PS3 is good...the online action is free. My brother bought one and loves it. If my 360 ever goes I will buy a PS3 now that they are getting less expensive.

The technician in me thought there was something severely wrong with wrapping an electrical device in a towel to get it to work. I am hoping this is a better fix, but we will see.....

I like that one the "reasons" to buy a 360 was it was cheaper. But how cheap really is buying 3-5 of them? And paying for online, and paying for extended warranty, and dealing with the frustration of a RROD. Stick with an Original and PS3 combo.

DOn't go praising the PS3 too much, my mate is stuck with a broken one ( no warranty) and he hasn't even finished paying for his extremely expensive paperweight. My bro's broke while playing Resistance Fall of man, and my mates mate had to get his replaced.

My 360 was replaced within 2 weeks and I got a month free online.

It's all swings and roundabouts.

My advice to anyone is don't put these things on the floor, it seems to kill them all.
Thats the main commonality between all the ones I know of that broke.

Yes you can get a wireless adapter that plugs onto the back of it, I have elite, I think it's just more HDD space, plus it looks cool.

Double post.

So I may aswell add, with the elite you won't be running out of space any time soon, or ever.

Just got down no more than 10 mins ago fixing a RROD. This will work if you are getting the 3 light RROD

RROD Fix

They sell a kit, but also list everything you will need to do it with.

With the new hard drive installs, I would imagine that the extra space you get with an Elite would come in pretty handy.

I can't believe I actually fixed it.

I was in doubt. After I did the fix, it still had the RROD.... I was very aggravated so I just admitted defeat and put the thing back together. To my surprise though... once it was fully assembled, it worked again. It has worked like a charm since I got it put back together.
