St. Louis police will have gun buy-back program after all

www.stltoday.com

In comments after the meeting, Slay criticized Alderman Quincy Troupe for his comments in the Post-Dispatch this week urging his constituents to arm themselves and take public safety into their own hands. (A message on Slay's blog about the matter was coyly titled "F Troupe.")

Said the mayor: "The more guns that are available, the more gun violence you are going to see on the street

Go figure...we FINALLY have an official tell us to arm ourselves and of course the government has to step in and try to keep us from doing just that.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Take away our right to bare arms and the only ones arming themselves (besides the law) will be the criminals!!

Take a falling economy and bait people into trading thier weapons for food...it's a pathetic ploy IMHO

*disclaimer* I am not a good speller! LOL

Why cant this happen in my town:

"People can turn over guns anonymously with no questions asked. The police will pay $50 per handgun and $100 for "assault-style" weapons. Only operable weapons will be accepted, the department said."

I would run an ad right next to theirs saying simply, The police are paying $50 and $100, Ill give you $75 and $150. Seriously, and "assault style" weapon? For $100? Last I checked the cheapest AK was going for $425. My arsenal would rival some foreign nations should I ever get to enjoy prices like this.

On a different note, why does anyone with anything resembling a brain fall for this? If the gun is hot, you shouldnt have it to begin with. Sure the cops tell you its anonymous, but if it turns out that firearm was used to kill 20 people do you seriously think they arent coming looking for you? If the firearm is legal, sell it to a dealer, make a little money.

I agree!

I'd love for them to try that here...my close knit group would go broke but be well armed.

I'm not sure why people are falling for this, other than when the cupboard is empty as well as the pocket and you have mouths to feed, one tends not to think clearly about the long term.
Pawn shops are just as guilty as this program...you bought it for 500, we'll 'loan' you 25.00 on it.
Hmm...maybe I should open up a pawn shop. On second thought I don't want to have to deal with law enforcement on it.

I like your idea of rivaling them on the price!

I wonder why you couldnt just hang out there at the buyback and if you see something worthwhile offer $20 more than the buyback is offering.

In most states that would be a perfectly legal FTF transaction. If the guns hot who cares? It's not like you're going to be dropping off at a crime scene or anything. Take with you a pre-fab bill of sale for the seller to sign and you're golden.

The worst thing about the buybacks that New Haven, CT had was if the cops came across a stolen firearm they wouldnt try to return it to the owner. They just 'destroyed' it. Or at least thats what they claimed. Rumors abounds they were selling them off for profit to agencies in other states.
