Ummm, there's no reason to think any space based weapons will be deployed to mitigate this threat.

Sure the option is there, but there are lots of other potential options too, and nuclear space-based weapons are now seen as one of the less likely options, since there is a danger of making things worse by using them.

It's more likely that one of the other ideas, such as gently nudging the NEO over a long period of time in order to make it miss, will be used to mitigate the threat.

They know something is coming, and now they've stolen trillions in order to develop and build their elite "Ark" a little bit of guilt has pushed them to throw us a few pennies and say "Go and build a pea shooter, there's a giant rock coming"

Nah its not that they know something is coming at all.
Its actually the other way around, they want this because they don't know whats coming.
Its the high probability that we are eventually going to risk being hit by an asteroid again.
We have been hit in the past and will risk being hit again.
These guys just want a plan in place to try and stop being hit.
In the past we just had to accept our fate and try and survive.
Now we are at a point in evolution where we could indeed actually stop it from hitting.
Yet there is not even a plan or even a committee or anything to deal with this specific threat.
Which threatens more harm to the human race than anything else.
These guys want a plan in place BEFORE they even know its coming.
Because even with all the sky watching, sometimes they don't even see it until its only months from getting here.
As has happened in the past.
And that is not enough time to start making a plan.
You need the plan in place now and execute it as soon as the object is found.
There is many scientists working on ways to stop them hitting us.
These guys want all these people together, all organized, so if one is found to be coming they will have a higher probability of success of trying to stop it.

I was only messing but I would think a supervolcano is more of a threat than some space rock.

They are both equally capable of destroying life as we know it. If we take our eyes off one, we risk being caught with our pants down.

In both cases, it's only a matter of time before the inevitable, unless we find ways of stopping these things in the mean time.
