Russian Ships to Venezuela in Show of Power

www.google.com

The voyage of the cruiser Peter the Great, scheduled to arrive in Venezuela next week with a squadron of other Russian warships, was meant to showcase the Kremlin's ability to project naval power abroad and reassert its claim to great power status.

But the arrival of the 24,000-ton nuclear-powered vessel and its escorts may mark the end of an era of rising ambitions for the Russian navy, not its beginning...

Seems that Russia is on track with earlier reports to send ships to the other side of the globe again, but the article also states that they may not be able to do all the maneuvers/exercises that Medvedev promised because of their waning naval fleet. Their plan is to do "joint maneuvers" with Venezuela next week and then move on to the Indian Ocean for more exercises. The article does not state with whom (if anyone) these Indian Ocean exercises will be accomplished.

As other ATSers have said in similar topics, this is just a political move by Russia to show everyone else what they can do with their military. However, according to the article, some military analysts and think tanks in both the U.S. and Russia believe it is a stupid move because it will not help change the way Russia's strength is perceived all that much since their navy is not currently up to the task.

Russia spending money and weakening it's position at request from rouge nations and 3rd world parties.

Nice (sarcasm) I thought they were smarter than us in this regard

why doesn't every country in the 1st world just let the 3rd world nations pull us down into the festering hole of a reality they exist in? The we could all be equal lol

USA pillar of the world economy wrecked itself dealing with nations like Iraq and Afghanistan heck,,, Afghanistan helped cause the collapse of the soviet union

It's time we wised up and let these places rot in peace and look out for ourselves, we are so busy opposing each other in the developed world we didn't stop to think the weight of people and places that... in the end through no fault of our own just stink to be and refuse to progress would be all our undoing

So, who is going to be the next World power out of all of this? Since Russia and the USA are seemingly screwed on that position.
Will it be:

India?

China?

Pakistan?

European Union?

Indonesia?

United Nations?

Or none of the above?

Russia is losing power? Its influence is waning?

Ummm... what literature are you guys reading?

Russia has some of the largest untouched arable land areas in the world, not to mention vast oil reserves.

There's been a fantastic transfer of wealth to Russia," observes Accenture energy analyst, Mark Spelman.
from this article

America is on its way out, not Russia. It will probably never get as bad in Russia as it is getting for Americans.

I agree, I do not think Russia is losing power. I think they are trying to gain more of an influence in the world, but maneuvering their waning NAVY is not the way to do it, according to the analysts. I believe that they are bringing some ships west to show the world, mainly the U.S., that they can do it. They are using Venezuela because they knew that Chavez would be all for it, just like they used Cuba during the Cold War. Too bad for Russia, however, that it probably will not have as big of a political impact as they may want since their navy needs some upgrading.
