Soaring costs for inauguration could break the bank for D.C.

Soaring costs expected to accompany huge crowds in town for the Jan. 20 inauguration of Barack Obama could stick cash-strapped Washington, D.C., with a record-breaking bill for services.

Security and capacity measures recommended by the District’s congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and others will almost certainly surpass the $15 million the federal government gives to the District each year to defray the cost of events, Norton said.

In 2005, with an estimated 300,000 in attendance, the second inauguration of President Bush cost the city more than $17 million, some of which was reimbursed with federal funds. This year, officials estimate nearly five times that many people for the swearing in of President-elect Barack Obama.

So it looks like the big Obama inauguration could bankrupt Washington. Literally!

This is an amazing thing to read in my opinion.

I wonder if Obama will take some of his massive left over campaign funds and "spread them around" to D.C to help cover the costs?

For some reason I doubt it.

Where are the liberals who complained about the cost of the inauguration celebration Bush threw 4 years ago? If I recall they came unglued over that cost... and now this one will be 5 times as expensive? www.infowars.com...

Buy Obama a damned paper party hat, pick up some bunting from a party supply store, and set off a few bottle rockets. Anything more than that is a waste of money and is ridiculous.

Agree completely.

Especially when it has a real chance of hurting the community because of it's extravagant expense.

Again, I wonder if Obama will "spread around" some of his unused campaign money to help them out?
