yeah.. its called the KKK.

Ever heard of it?

Sure, but what does the KKK have to do with Oldtimer's post, or this thread?

Again be careful in pointing the racist finger at white people, or anyone in general because that always leaves 4 fingers pointing right back at you.

As an outsider, I am quite happy that this is happening now. Although there is some heat, Obama has no sh1 on his shoes because he hasn't started 'work' yet and so cannot have wound people up over real policy. If you get this out of your systems before he does a 'politician' (ie screw up royally), you ought to get this out of the way before someone figures assasinations are sensible propositions......

Did you see the article?

They are using the KKK activity as a data point!

Crosses burning in yards, as mentioned in the OP!

The article posted is directly about racism.

OldTimer is dismissing racist grafitti, crosses burning in yards, and a rise in KKK activity as some sort of liberal whining!?

For Christs sake, this is a report from the Christian Science Monitor... how can that be LIBERAL?

yeah .. no doubt... perhaps you should take that advice!

My point was that the issue is now more out in the open than it has been in years. Racists--on both sides--have been pulled out of the closet and this will provide an oportunity to look at the issue, and, I hope, open these peoples' minds.

I'm no racist, just trying to point out that NOBODY should be playing that card. But if you want to call me one - either directly, or indirectly as you did here - on ATS, I will have no problem clicking on the alert button.

I do so enjoy threads like these. It quickly identifies which posters are so closed minded that they actually believe anyone who doesn't agree with them or is on the other side of a political issue is racist and ignorant and hate-filled. You will be disappointed to find out that despite a few Internet stories for a majority of people this isn't true. One of my better friends (best friend is kind of a lame term) and I share nearly everything in common except for political ideologies. Same job field, both married with kids, nearly same income bracket, same neighborhood, etc. We just see different sides of the coin. And guess what we're still friends!

Same here, a dear friend of mine is black, female, and she voted for Obama and I care a great deal for her and her children. And we vehemently disagree about Obama.

Thank you OP, for this thread. Please allow me to inject a little of my home-grown version of common sense into it:

It does not matter whether Obama is mixed or 'pure' black. He has darker skin than a Caucasian; therefore there are many people who will always see him as a 'black man'.

It does not matter whether Obama is the first black President or the first mixed President. He is, as of his January inauguration, the 44th President.

The article originally referenced mentioned something about talk of secession in the South. I am in the South, but I have heard absolutely nothing of it. What I hear is concern over what kind of President Obama will make and what kind of decisions he will make in that office. People as a rule are not nearly as racist as the MSM would have us believe. The biggest racial concern is over whether or not Obama will represent 'white America' as well as he does 'black America'. I do not think that will be a problem. I found his views on racism refreshingly honest and promising during the campaign (and yes, I am white).

There have been atrocities on both sides, and both sides need to calm down. The American people have spoken, and if anyone honors John McCain at all, please remember that eloquent concession speech he gave, IMO the best speech from him during the entire campaign.

One racial consideration is relevant to our point in history: Obama's success or failure as a President. If he does give an impression overall of favoring one race, it will lead to extreme criminal racial actions among the people. I think (hope) he knows that. If he fails during his Presidency, it will stir up racism again toward blacks, as many will see that as 'proof' of inferiority. If he succeeds, however, which I pray he does, it will once and for all put an end to widespread racism in America. That would be a good thing.

Regardless of his success or failure, it will not change everyone's mind. But it will change the thinking of most, and that is all we can ask out of such a diverse and divided society as we now live in. Therefore we should all, united as one force as only the American people can be, support and accept this coming era, and work diligently to make it the best we have seen yet. God bless all America.

May we look forward to the next 4 (8?) years of prosperity and peace.

I never called you a racist.

let's recap.

The OP posted an article from the CS Monitor that stated that racist actions have risen since we Elected BO.

Oldtimer said "Bunch of whining liberals crying racism"

I stated... "What about the KKK isn't racist". I said this because it was one of the big things in the article which was posted.

Then you said "What does the KKK have to do with this thread?"

And so I said "It has everything to do with the thread since it was a major data point in the article which was posted!"

And now... Now... you think I'm calling you a racist?

Maybe I'm calling you blind and maybe I'm saying you didn't read the OP's article... but I'm not sure where you get the "I'm calling you a racist" BS.

And as far as your point that nobody should be playing that card. No one is! at least not in this article. It's simply talking about the rise in hate crimes since the election... how is this Conservative paper (the CS Monitor) playing a card?

This is the funniest thing I've read today, in a good way.

Although I agree that organized gangs are capable of obtaining nuclear weapons, I disagree with the notion that they would actually detonate one. I know from experience, these gangs are nothing more than businesses who sell drugs, firearms and people in some cases. So I would think that the gang would do themselves more harm than good if they destroyed their customers by means of WMD.

Well...we knew this would happen. The nasty and small minded are coming out in force. I think that we are going to see the racist underbelly of the country rear its ugly head. On the up side, the issue is going to be out in the open like never before--and that, potentially, could provide a chance to educate and enlighten these people.

from my perspective on the sidelines, just north of the border so to speak, I would say its the American way; the way you guys always fight about things. Its the flip side of the coin of your "freedoms" - free to be ignorant, to be opinionated, to be regional, to not trust outsiders.

In spite of what the most paranoid and belligerent amongst you would say, there is no one in your country actually trying to force people into how they should think; and so its everyone for themselves. Sometimes its a brawl, but I think it does work out in the end; hopefully without bloodshed.
Here in Canada we tend to go about things more calmly, but that is because you guys get the heavy fighting out of the way ahead of time, and there is less for us decide about the matter once it gets to us.
Good luck to you. I am optimistic about your near future in spite of the problems you will surely see along the way.

ahahha please man your trying to say that the white man is oppressed! This is just plain funny and stupid. First of all the system is completely against minorites and benefits rich white americans. Just to give you an example 47% of drug dealers and abusers are minorities but 75% of the people who get sent to prison for drugs are minorities. One of the Ivy League schools did a study on how hard it is for a black man to get a job and the study showed that a black male that has no criminal background and has the same qualifications as a whitle male, gets jobs about the same as a white man that has been to jail. I cannot beleive these white people that honestly beleive that they are oppressed. You guys have never faced any real racism or racial struggles in your life but you call plans that benefit minorities which really don't benefit minorites white oppression. Wow this is the problem with white America. They just don't realize the racism and oppression that minorities face and actually believe that minorities have it eaiser then them.

I think this has less to do with race than with a more subtle issue.
Most people are creatures of habit; men and women create their own personal sort of bubble in which certain things are possible and others aren't. Its the only thing which keeps most people from waking up screaming in the middle of the night because they can't stop thinking about all of the nasty things which may happen; while a person's perceptions may not change reality, they certainly color it. And the president-elect's color happens to be darker than the norm. Some people simply are upset about a Democrat in office (stupid to judge by party if you ask me), a few less are concerned with the fact that his policies resemble socialism (and I must stress the word "resemble"), and fewer still can be found lurking around forums and forests thinking up conspiracies. People hate and fear what they can't control, and nobody can control changes in the world, let alone each other. To sum it up, most people are simply afraid, though they don't know of what, and subconsciously attribute their emotions to certain details of their lives. In the case of Obama, the easiest, most obvious, and, sadly, in most places, acceptable thing to focus this fear upon is the fact that the man is black. Oh, of course there are perhaps thousands of ignorant whites who are too single-minded to look past skin color, but it seems more logical to assume that, given the progress made over the last few decades, a large number of people who are upset with a black president are simply behaving childishly by projecting their fears upon an easy target. Its a mild form of mass-hysteria, if you happen to be a student of psychology; as someone or other rather famous once said, "The person is smart. People are stupid, panicky creatures and you know it."

That being said, I dislike all politicians equally, regardless of race or gender; Obama's skin color has nothing to do with the fact that I don't like him.

Myth: Lots of countries have successfully integrated other races into their governments and societies.

Truth: Most countries have NOT successfully integrated other races into their governments and societies.

Examples: France. The french have completely failed at integrating blacks and minorities into their culture. In 2005, race riots engulfed the entire country. Thousands and thousands of automobiles were torched. Riot police were overwhelmed. Blacks and minorities live in vast ghettos surrounding Paris. No jobs. No opportunities. It's really bad and it continues to grow and fester.

Look at any other country in the world and you will see the truth. From the Paraguas in Argentina, the "Churki" of Russia, and the Burakumin of Japan. It's all over the world. It's really, really bad in Africa! Look at the current Congo crisis. Wikipedia racism in any country and you will get a description of it.

By electing Obama, America has made a huge statement to the entire world. It's like we've stepped on the Moon again for the first time. It's a whole new world again, and the United States has taken the lead.

When the free world needed an athlete, America produced Jesse Owens. Now the free world needs a historic US President. I pray Obama wins the gold.
