I thought the tanks ended up getting recovered after everyone started dying of radiation poisoning. Am I mistaken?

Okay, I'm sorry to be asking such a ditzy and unsophisticated question but just exactly how does one go about hi-jacking such a big-ass ship? This isn't the 1700's. These boats are huge.
How do the pirates actually gain control of the boat? Do they threaten to blow it up with shoulder-fired missiles or something? If so, why aren't these boats equipped with defense weapons and/or a security team, especially boats traveling in this region?

Does anyone know what happened with this story. There was a deadline but it's long past.
I tried Google, but I couldn't find any recent news.
The vessels include the Sirius Star, a Saudi supertanker with two British crew on board, which was hijacked on November 15. Negotiations are continuing for its release.
