It's bound to happen, people! You all know it! So when it happens, I hope you can draw on this guide to ensure your survival.

1. KIT: Keep it together

The most important thing in a crisis like this is to keep a level head and to pull the proverbial thumb. You will not survive a night by panicking so keep it together.

Remember the cover of the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy: Don't Panic

2. Secure food and water

Zombie's deteriorate with time, as the decompose. However, unless you want to the same, make sure you get those essential supplies. Being as how society is in ruins at the moment, I'm sure you're not going to be nicked for looting the local supermarket.

Get some of this

3. Pack heat!

This is a no-brainer. Zombies may be dumb and slow but it its likely that you are going to have to got through them at some point and guns are the tools for that job. You may also find yourself stuck between zombies and a hard place, so pack an axe, sword, machete or even a chainsaw in case you "personal space" is violated.

Get guns. Get lots of guns.

4. Make some friends

If it's earlier on in the disaster, survivors are going to be many, try and form a troop. Not too many because the group is only as fast as it's slower member. However, there is safety in numbers so somewhere between 4 and 8 people- ... all armed!

5. Aquire some wheels

The streets are no longer a place for a living person any more, a non-zombie (a "nombie", if you will). You need a way of getting around the supermarkets and gun stores in town without being swarmed, you need a vehicle and a significant one at that (no smart cars!). Go big, go powerful, go American muscle. Something like a pickup or large SUV is ideal. Most car owners at this point are dead, so I'm sure they won't mind you borrowing their vehicle.

Don't forget to make sure you have a full tank, some emergency tanks and batteries because you won't be coming back to the city in the foreseeable future.

6. Head for the hills

The countryside is the only safe place to go because of how limited the zombies are with speed and distance they can cover. Zombie outbreaks only occur in high population density areas, ie. cities. The virus (or whatever) is bound to get to the countryside too, but considering low density out there, the virus is virtually incapable of spreading (unless the zombies can drive like you can).

7. Deal with the dead and dying

If any of your group have died as a result of dealing with zombies, destroy it. I don't care how loved they are, you will regret not doing anything fast. If someone has been bitten by a zombie and hasn't died yet, you simply need to drop them off with a handgun and some food, drive off and let that be that. It's best to deal with infections before people turn that way no one has to get hurt.

8. Secure the group in a safe place

Now you are safe, in the countryside with no one carrying the an infection. You are away from the zombies, have your supplies and it's time to barricade yourself off from the outside world. There are many places out there that will be suitable as a fort, not to mention you will find more survivors. This place will be your home for the foreseeable future. Until the infestation dies off inside the cities, it will be to dangerous to go anywhere so get settled.

Good luck from your friendly neighbourhood wolf.

there's a stellar thread on zombies on ATS somewhere, fully tongue in cheek.

The author of the above mentioned books is Mel Brooks' son Max. The survival guide is a spoof on how to books and survival guides and it's very funny. World War Z is even better. It details the origins of the zombie outbreak that wiped out much of the population and takes you thru the entire war, told from the vantage point of people involved every step of the way. It's actually a very biting take on society today. There's a great scene in the book where the US military battles the zombies using everything in our arsenal, a bit of shock and awe, if you will.

Wow, Crakeur, I didn't expect that you'd post on here.

Thanks I'll be sure to check those out. I thought up this list watching Dawn of the Dead and what I would do in a zombie outbreak.

I think there would be something extremely therapeutic about killing zombies like killing people but not really killing people, like action without consequence.

..or maybe I'm nuts.
