Doctors say marrow transplant may have cured AIDS

BERLIN - An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said.

Completely cured of AIDS? A bone marrow transplant in Berlin supposedly cured a man of aids less than two years after he received the transplant.

Dr. Gero Huetter said Wedneday his 42-year-old patient, an American living in Berlin who was not identified, had been infected with the AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer shows signs of carrying the virus.

"We waited every day for a bad reading," Huetter said.

It has not come.

I wonder if this is going to be the beginning of a something extremely big, or will this get swept under the rug to die?

This isn't the first time marrow transplants have been attempted for treating AIDS or HIV infection. In 1999, an article in the journal Medical Hypotheses reviewed the results of 32 attempts reported between 1982 and 1996. In two cases, HIV was apparently eradicated, the review reported.

Anyway, i get excited reading stuff like this.

It can't get swept under the rug now, this is big news on alot of MSM channels.

Too many rich people with AIDS will want the cure and as things in life go, it will then trickle down. Alot of money could be made of this "cure", considering the extent of the AIDS epedemic.

Not sure those in Africa would benefit and not just because of greedy, corporate fat cats. Their own Governments promote the spread of HIV by telling them witchcraft, baby-raping, eating fruit and other nonsense cures will work. The Gov. of South Africa is a prime example of this.

This is good and important but there are already at least 2 threads on this subject.

I will say this in a way it reminds me of the discovery that a gastric bypass (not the lapband) and variations thereof cure diabetes.

It would be absolutely amazing if something that simple could cure AIDS. And compared to living the rest of your life on an expensive regimen of drugs that won't cure you, I'd imagine that there are a lot of people who would jump at the chance to be in clinical trials or studies or whatever they decide to do to test this on more people to see if it truly works. I really hope that it's not just a diagnostic error or a complete coincidence or whatever that this guy is healthy again.
