The X-43A is part jet, part rocket unmanned aircraft that reached a speed of 7,000 kilometers, or 4,780 mph. It flew at an altitude of 100,000 feet, and was dropped from a B-52. The jet/rocket flew on its own for ten seconds before plunging into the ocean.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, United States (AFP) - An experimental X-43 pilotless plane broke the world speed record for an atmospheric engine, briefly flying at 7,700 kilometers (4,780 miles) per hour -- seven times the speed of sound, NASA (news - web sites) said.

jeez thats fast...

on a close note, does anyone record speeds for underwater craft? that would be interesting...probably isnt too fast with the water acting as a constant barrier and all..
