The show was entertaining, but I think that it is less survival than you might be led to believe. It is entertainment folks.
He is not randomly dropped in some unknown location--he does extensive research prior to filming a location--including visiting the area in advance.
Every plant, animal, water element that is in play is researched--he knows exactly what he is going to do, what he is going to film, and basically has
a specific plan in advance of being dropped off--including what "random" piece of equipment he is left with.
If his producers grabbed him, blind folded him, and dumped him somewhere without telling him what was going on, yeah, then it might be a bit more
impressive.
Don't get me wrong--he has survival skills, but this show has detailed planning in advance.
