AP poll shows Obama backers gleeful, McCain's glum

WASHINGTON (AP) — That smiling guy walking down the street? Odds are he's a Barack Obama backer. The grouchy looking one? Don't ask, and don't necessarily count on him to vote on Tuesday, either.

The survey shows McCain backers have become increasingly upset in recent weeks, a period that has seen Obama take a firm lead in many polls. One expert says the contrasting moods could affect how likely the two candidates' supporters are to vote on Election Day, possibly dampening McCain's turnout while boosting Obama's.

While I am an Obama supporter, this article really ticks me off.
I think it is very wrong to put the idea out there that McCain supporters are not going to vote it puts ideas in peoples heads on both sides.
"Oh Obama is going to win hands down I can sit home and eat bonbons." or "Oh McCain is going to lose hands down so I can sit home and eat bonbons."

While 43 percent of the Democrat Obama's backers said they are excited over the campaign, just 13 percent of McCain's said so, according to the survey of adults, conducted by Knowledge Networks. Six in 10 Obama supporters said the race interests them, compared to four in 10 backing McCain, the Republican senator from Arizona.
On the flip side, 52 percent of McCain supporters said the campaign has left them frustrated, compared to 30 percent of Obama's. A quarter of McCain backers say they feel helpless, double the rate of those preferring Obama, the Illinois senator.
More McCain supporters also feel angry and bored, while Obama's are likelier to say they are proud and hopeful.

This goes back to why are Republicans so angry?
I think Republicans are and should be extremely angry at their own party.
McCains campaign has messed up over and over, high profile republicans are jumping ship and the base is left with a message that doesnt exist anymore. I know I was once a republican, I voted Bush 2 times, I jumped ship a year and a half ago which might be why I dont have the anger anymore.

That's an interesting article.

Maybe they feel like the way we did back in the year 2000 (us Democrats) when Gore lost.

My advice to you-- is that-- they probably feel the same way that we did when Bush won both times, so, you need to respect them, and show empathy for them (not sympathy) if they lose.

Show them respect, and, they'll show respect back.

We need them to feel hopeful too. We can't make them feel all doom and gloom.

Looks like the media tactic of depressing Republican voters is working. 24 hours a day 7 days a week of non-stop Mccain/Palin bashing tends to have that effect on people.

Don't you think that since John McCain is running as a candidate for a party that just had a really unpopular President that could have something to do with it?

You and I live in two completely different realities. It is interesting how people see what they want to see. Obviously we don't watch the same programing or visit the same websites because I have seen pretty much the opposite. I see McCain / Palin supporters on an all out assault on Obama (Socialist, Marxist, Fake Birth Certificate, Aunt, Anti-Christ, Black Supremacist, other nations will test him, ...... and on and on and on and on.....etc) all the while trying to play the sympathy card for taking so much abuse themselves.

I am not even an Obama supporter but the negative campaign that is being run by the McCain camp has absolutely disgusted me.

Perhaps it's because everytime the news comes on it's all for Obama,and yes perhaps those in favor of Mc Cain are depressed on what the outcome could be,why the ones voting for Obama have visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads,ask someone voting for Obama,they really think once he takes office everything is going to be great

You don't need the media to have depressed Republican voters just look at your candidates.

The media is just a scapegoat for you guys don't have to waste what few working brain cells you have left trying to address the issues as to why your party has so alienated voters.

SO damn the torpedos and full speed ahead and blame the media.

I'm feeling pretty good about it, to be honest. The media is definitely trying to supress GOP turnout, but I think that McCain has a solid chance at pulling off the upset, much better than he did 3-4 weeks ago. With a little luck and high Republican turnout, I think he can do it.

I believe it will be close, regardless of who wins.

I'm right there with you, grover. No matter how many polls or electoral college numbers I see, I'm withholding my glee. It's there, just under the surface bursting to get out, but I've been burned before and I remember it well. I've gone so far to emotionally prepare myself for a loss, but I'm open to a win.

As regards Obama supporters being gleeful and McCain supporters being grumpy, I can TOTALLY believe that. Obama is running a hopeful, inspiring, positive, well-organized campaign. McCain has been all over the place and he's angry, negative and glum himself.

Obama's campaign has been SO successful! Ironically, he drew on a lot of his experience as a community organizer to mobilize his people and his campaign to be as sharp and responsive as they were...

Anyway for those out there that wants to listen to predictions.

Obama will be the next president of this nation.

And I take that to the banks.

Anyone who is "gleeful" at this point seem to be totally out of touch with what is going on in the United States. How can anyone be gleeful considering we are in one of the worst financial crises in history--surely no one thinks that whoever is elected is going to have an easy time of it. Obama or McCain, either one who gets elected, has an extremely difficult first two years to make it through and someone who is "gleeful" would seem to be shallow and not focusing on the mounting crisis for our nation. I just pray that whoever is elected surrounds himself with an impressive group of advisors who understand the seriousness of the crisis and who have the historical knowledge and economic expertise to help guide us out of this impending recession which could quickly escalate into another depression if the wrong policies and actions are chosen. One word: Hoover.
