I believe that the mindset of America anymore is becoming a hodpodge of thoughts of nothingness. Our kids watch cartoons that have absolutely no meaning and no value, they are pointless , have you watched any of your kids cartoons they watch, watch spongebob once, entirely pointless...
Television shows are meaningless as well, things used to have meaning and importance, It appears to me maybe that they have already dumbed down america and now only serve to keep that dumbed down population happy with this twisted non evolving entertainment that is produced every day of the week. It seems they are leading our kids to have no formed ways of thinking whatsoever, no planning, no organization skills, no preparedness, no abstract thinking.
The kids want stupidy over and over without end, it isn't like our days when we were kids watching Johny Quest, these new cartoons have absolutely no reality base. They spend there time watching tv shows like Jake and Josh or I CARLY, which are pointless trival as well.
Its one thing to lose touch with reality due from mental illness ,but to lose it from watching television, these shows mesmerize these kids, almost like mind control. I see the pattern too, and they don't, every little show our kids watch, the characters develop into hollywood stars and musicians, when the actors actual talents are nowhere near the level they should be for the fame our children give them, which develops into videos and video games our kids want us to buy them. WHich I might add the video games combined with this TV programming makes our kids weak physically and mentally. IM pulling the plug as soon as I can find a way to do it without turning my kid into an outcast.

I hear you.

I reside in Sweden and the situation here is maybe not as bad as you put it, but it is surely enough leaning towards that way.
Have to mention WoW though, I am a bit worried about that. Even though there was a study made on the gaming generation that debunked most myths and proving that kids who game are just as healthy in general as anyone else. It is just a different world for them, a world you can either join or dispise- either way it will come to rule alone in a couple of generations...I imagine... But that is maybe a bit OT.

But I have to ask you- what has the content of your post to do with the goverment?
Up here, public service is about the only stuff worth watching: lots of great documentaries, high quality movies- not only from Hollywood (accually quite seldom from Hollywood), deep investigaion programs about the goverment and govermental branches, news with as little bias as possible, information of how to live a better life, kids shows that are accually quite educating even for adults, shows specific for our ethical minorities and so on and on and on...
And all this is provided by the goverment, funded by something we call "TV-license" which is mandatory (and pretty expensive!
)

I think the problem is that the department of education and communication has given in to the free market way too much.
Or am I far out on slippery ice here?

[edit to add: I tried watching "Digimon" (NOT on public service thank God) the other day. I couldn't understand nothing! What the hell was happening? Am I THAT old? The entire show made no sense AT ALL to me...

I agree with you , and envy you, America is about obliteration anymore, too much, too fast, too insane. I would love it if my kid had the desire to turn the channel to something educational,

But he won't, right now as I write this post, he is watching ICARLY, and is oblivious to the outside world.

I see my country changing all around me into this goop of joke, everything has become unclear and backwards. It's like a spider bit america and now all of it's infrastructure is digesting into a stew, only we are left to guess who the spider is and when it's going to finish us off.

I am going to ask my son right now if he wants to watch something cool like a doc on sharks and I will put his reply below

Well I was wrong hes in here begging to see a shark show, that is wierd.
maybe there is a future.

Hehe, great work.

Replace all channels with Animal Planet (no commercials even!)

But let me just say it once again that I feel for you, and I know exactly what you mean. It is like they are taking custody of our children, a kidnap in order to mold them into future consumers with no set backs.

It is freakin horrible.

Go sharky!

For some reason I remembered this thread awhile back, and I thought I'd bump it up. I'm starting to think that here in the United States that most of the citizens are slowly being programed to some degree.

They are driving us insane... slowly but surely.

They'll start making it harder and harder to survive in this country until you start to go mental.

The next 5 years of my life... Should be pretty crazy.

I thought that was the plan. To poison us with floride and Aspertaime and turn our brains to jello with junk television. I am partly kidding here and partly feel this is true.

My kids are always mad at me because I won't let them watch Family Guy and South Park. I make them watch the "educational" shows when they want to watch TV & we turn the TV off in the evenings. I would poke out my eyes if they/we would have to watch American Idol or that other junk they put on in the evenings.

ok ok ... they do watch a wee bit of the "tween" programs...but not too much. They still have to be kids right?
