Thats freakin crazy. You must have a fair openness to such spectres, or they wouldnt have spooked you out so bad. I dont think your g/m comment about him being afraid of bikers was pointed at you. He would not have tagged you and hidden in your house if he related you to his fear. I think he was trying to stay on the run and his lack of fear of you is what lead him to attach to you. I could be wrong. I just dont see spooks that dont realize they are spooks sneaking into a situation that would frighten them.
Dogs are fairly attuned to things that people cannot see or hear based on their very enhanced senses, but cats are the best form of spectral warning. I swear they can see them as if they were real.
I always check when my dogs bark in the house. It usually means that at some point, someone they do not know has broken the edge of their yard (visiting, turning around, walking by, etc). My lab can be asleep in the bedroom and in a split second change to tail up, hackled, growling and barking and make it to the living room in just a few strides. I am usually right behind her to check the front porch or to see if someone is just walking by. There have been cases where they got startled and there was no one at all to be seen up or down the road, or on the property. I just normally dismiss it, but I might start paying a bit more attention after hearing your story.
