HIV scare puts Mo. school in uncertain territory

news.yahoo.com

NORMANDY, Mo. – Students at a suburban St. Louis high school headed to the gymnasium for HIV testing this week after an infected person told health officials as many as 50 teenagers might have been exposed to the virus that causes AIDS.

This is just nuts. This is a developing story so I will post information as it comes. Like how the hell does an infected kid get off saying that 50 MORE KIDS may be infected. What the hell is going on at this school?

the district is consulting with national AIDS organizations as it tries to minimize the fallout and prevent the infection — and misinformation — from spreading.

Mis Information? How about just giving the truth?

Sounds like a really smooth casanova type or Christy Brinkly type that liked to sleep around to me. EWould that surprise anyone in this day and age.

WOW. As to exposure, well there's unprotected sex but 50 different people seems like a lot for high school. There's drug use and needles, that could be part of it. If he or she was hurt in say gym and bled, that could be some of it.

I'm out of options at this point. What I am unclear on is, did the child find out the had AIDS and then told them 50 people could be exposed or did they know they were positive and engaged in risky behavior anyway?

It's hard to believe it could be spread to so many people. They mentioned some possible sources, but I doubt it was through sex, drug use maybe but even that's high. I wonder when this happened, because the ELISA test doesn't pick up the virus upon exposure. Might take a little longer before they can say for certain who has or doesn't have the virus.

50 is very few on an aids road map. Lots of teens like to have sleep overs where dozens and dozens make love to each other.

On the other hand this needs to be looked into more closely. Because they are underage privacy laws will most likely make this story go away, plus its so un msm...

HAVING READ THE LINK I feel so very badly for the children and families at that school, my God can you imagine all of the kids who have made love for the first time and possibly only time, only to be told that they need to be tested? Pray for the whole situation.
I am going to share this with my young children, I do worry for their health and safety. This is going to be an excellent example of what I have told them about young healthy looking teens and the rise in highschool aids.

Don't know if they still do this in schools, but not that long ago (early to mid 90's) when I was in high school, I remember getting a vaccinne or two as well as one of those blood sugar prick tests from the school nurse. I certainly wasn't the only one, either, we'd get called to the nurse's office according to our homeroom number through the course of maybe 2 weeks and that way the school would quickly know who might have juvenile diabetes and such.

All it would have taken is for the first kid to have the AIDS and the nurse do something dumb like contaminate the rest of the needles or pins and we'd have all been at risk for the AIDS.

The article does seem to point to transmission in a sexual way.

50 in high school can be a high number for one person but it is likely this is a 50 people linkage sort of thing. I have known a few that could possibly have hit 50 from junior high to high school though. Is it any wonder though that the report came out earlier this year stating 1 in 4 teen girls had an STD?

Seeing as how this town is only 124 miles from where I live it is likely this could also have effects this far away. The chances are lower than if I lived closer but they are still there. I truly feel for any teen that has to go through that. I cannot imagine the thoughts going through so many minds right now.

Interesting. I really find it hard for the infected kid to be able to identify where he contracted the disease, and also know that others were indeed infected.

On a more conspiratorial front, perhaps the kid found evidence of a sinister plot?

Either way, interested to see how this plays out. Hopefully with a cure.

The detection "window" is 6 months. So yes, there will be tests and more tests. Peace of mind will be a long time coming for these children and parents.

The report posted on CNN states that the district does not know how the infected individual is connected to the school, or even if they are. Due to privacy laws, this information has not been released. The infected individual may be a student at the high school or an adult or teen from outside. Even the cause of the possible transmission to the fifty students will not be made known to the school district or any of its members.

"We do know there was some potential exposure between that person and students," he said. "We don't know the individual or the route of transmission."

I wonder if all these potential victims will have tattoos? Could be a local tattoo artist. Sex doesn't seem to fit the limited details, and drug use seems to be a stretch.

It is odd that the details state that "This Man" had "Exposure" to the students. So eerie.
