I hear claims all the time that some guy has perfected the process and can do it with less energy.. however have not seen any documented proof..
Now you want to really run a car on other fuel get a old Benz, a 300d and if your in a warm climate, just dump vegetable oil in the tank , and drive.. I'm serious.
Look up Rudolf Diesel, he invented the diesel engine to run on peanut oil, and to this day most diesel will run on vegetable oil, the more computer controlled the worse they are.. however, i have done 2 conversions on my vehicles and use a heated tank and fuel lines as I'm in cold climate , other wise the oil get to thick to run it.. but it does work and actually the Benz i have runs smoother on vegetable oil than on diesel.
Litteraly a diesel can actually run on almost any oil (plan or animal) if you can get it to be a liquid and flow easy through the fuel system, you can even run it on hydrolic oil or motor oil or even crude oil. Many of the oil tankers actually ran on the crude in there holds.
Now the problem is veggie oil is more expensive than gas or diesel, unless you use used oil and filter it so it clean.. thats what most people do, however it is a fair amount of work and messy.

well, don't believe me, i just saying , that if everyone switched, it would be a huge blow to the people who sell crude oil and many other organizations.
