A message from my dead grandparents ?

I have just come through a period of several years of severe depression which has caused all sorts of pain for myself and family - I feel fine now thanks to finally accepting the problem and medication.

During this time I have always 'prayed' to Kitty and Jack, my lovely grandparents who died 10 or so years ago, crying out for help or a message to help me.

I hadn't tried it for quite a while, but about a year ago when I was having some help from a therapist, I felt a little less muddled and asked for a sign. I forgot about it for a few hours after I got no bangs, voices or tickles - the obvious stuff.

It was when I went to the toilet that something strange happened.
The smell of my grandparents back room appeared.

This was a complex smell that was comforting as a child, a mixture of plants, old people(!?), oil, plant food, tomatoes(home grown), parrafin and bleach amongst others!

I was staggered that such a complex smell could just 'arrive' by chance and was cheered up massively by this 'sign'.

I like to think that they have been trying to help all along but you cannot receive the signals when depressed.

What do you think ? Any similar experiences ?

Indeed I have. I am myself trying to escape from depression presently (oh God, I can already hear them saying that there's your common thread...) but meds don't help me. Quite to the contrary: they make it so much worse!

I get scents/flavours/visions rather frequently, not just when I'm in need of direction or inspiration. Sometimes it's actually from someone close to me who is very much alive. For example, my son and daughter went to get school books downtown. I was on our balcony eating some strawberries when suddenly I could taste a bagel with both fresh and sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, onions and cream cheese. A while later, I called them to find out when they'd be home. They were in the metro on their way homeward. I asked which of them had had a bagel with juicy tomatoes. They confessed that they both had, and with the other stuff mentioned above too.

My grandmother hasn't appeared to me in my dreams for some years now but the last time she did, she left me with a puzzle of sorts. We were in a completely white "room" and the only bit of furniture there was a 1.5m tall (about 5ft) wooden cabinet. I asked her to please let me hold her, that I missed her so very much. She only told me to pay attention, that this is important. She opened the top part of the cabinet (the upper section was smaller, maybe 30cm [12") high) and told me that it doesn't open this way, indicating the knobs opening from the inside outward; it opens this way, indicating that the doors open from the outside inward.

I hope that is legible/intelligible. If not, I'll try to clarify.

Thanks for the reply - sorry to hear you are depressed, it is such a horrible experience and I hope somehow you can get better.

My grandparents appear in my dreams quite a lot but they look different even though I know it's 'them'.

I am pretty sure they are around me.

As for tasting the bagel - that sounds like a kind of telepathy. I used to be very close to mys sister and we would share the same dreams from time to time......

On the subject of meds, I know they're not for everyone but have you tried a few? One that I took made me a lot worse but I found a better one after that.

Yes I got a smell similar to that after my gran passed on, it was sweet and popped up in different places in the house. You could walk through it basically, almost like a ghost and immediately smell the sweet aroma. I did some small research and some say it's their passed on family letting them know they are there, etc...

Once I was getting inbetween a christian and muslim debate, I was so focused to the screen just waiting to have a say at either side, it was serious and then the smell hit me and it was so strong that it brought tears to my eyes

My sister couldn't smell it, but for about a week or two I just kept on walking through this very sweet aroma, go into a different room then no smell, take a few more steps and walk through the smell then it goes away.

Do you think it could be just a memory but in a form of a smell that may be triggered by something ?

I do hope that it ist my/our grandparents but theres always an element of doubt.

Hello again. Thank you for your sentiments. I won't try meds again - and yes, I tried many - because while I was depressed the last time, I realized what I was doing that kept digging me deeper into it. Now I'm doing some work on my own, without the help of a doctor or meds, to see if I can control it and perhaps even get out of it. Meds are just bad. I want to be the mechanism that controls it. Meds just give the control of yourself from the disease to the meds. You still aren't able to be yourself. Sorry if that's again cryptic. It's hard to phrase things the way I want to at the moment.

Yes, there's the telepathy aspect too, except that the mouth isn't the receptor for telepathy, is it?

Is there really a difference as to which of the senses actually does the sensing? I mean, are we discussing smell exclusively in this thread?

Not really just discussing smell - that's just the most compelling 'evidence' that I've had.

I'm actually a chef so it's interesting that I experienced things this way..... I'm not sure how they tasted so it's maybe the next best thing !

Hope I am making sense....

It was just after my gran died. This was no ordinary smell it was a very sweet divine aroma and it reminded me of my gran. For about 2 weeks I kept on walking through this smell every now and then in the house. It wasn't in a fixed place, I just walked right through it in any part of the house. My sister couldn't smell anything at all but i'm convinced it was my gran letting me know she is there and everything is ok.

Other than this I havn't seen or had dreams I would label strange I seem to be the guy that doesn't get these weird things lol like seeing aliens, etc..

I think thats awesome.

My grandmother passed this summer. Her smell was sort of a... rose lotion, asprin and tic tacs combination of smells.....

That smell just kind of "hit me" one day not too long ago, while doing the most mundane of things around the house...

I'm sure they've been around for you when you've needed them...

Your ancestors are always around you. Look at all the ancient peoples who used to honor their dead. Lot of peoples/nations still do. Makes sense! Who else has a more vested interest in your success?

I'm a Pastry Chef. Interesting coincidence. But I'm on a fairly heavy spiritual path so taste is only a small part of my overall experience.

Speaking of which, I'm off to give a healing. byez!
