Iraq: US dropped nuclear bomb near Basra in 1991, claims veteran

Jim Brown, a mechanic in the Army's 10th Mountain Division at the time, told Italian state news channel RaiNews24 that Washington dropped a nuclear bomb in a deserted area outside the city of Basra near the Iranian border in 1991.

The bombing, which took place on the last day of the war in Iraq on February 27th, caused an explosion equal to a five-kiloton blast.

The allegations draw parallels with the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, which created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT.

According to a number of US military heavyweights, the devastating attack on Japan was not necessary as the country had already been seeking a way to surrender with a minimum loss of 'face'.

"The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender," said William D. Leahy, a former admiral and chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I looked for this topic already posted, but couldnt find anything on it. If true, WOW! - the correlated seismic data is compelling, although I know nothing of geology, etc. If tactical nukes are already being used, all the "Arrmegedon"-types may be closer to the mark than I once thought. Anyone else seen anything on this?

Have not seen anything but the claim seems like it could fit. The statistics are very interesting when it is stated in conjunction with this claim. I shall do more research....good post

Wow. If this turns out to be fact, America's enemies are going to have a field day. Whatever Morale authority America had left will be completely lost.

Hmmm...I'm not ready to say this is true yet, but I'm not willing to rule it out either. What develops in the coming months or so should prove to be interesting especially as more information on it becomes available.

I was in the PGW. I was there from Oct 1990 - March 1991. I felt a lot of concussion waves from the bombings. We were across the border and heading towards Bazra when the Highway of Death incident occurred. We stopped for 2 days waiting to see if the cease-fire was going to hold before heading back to Saudi Arabia. We watched nightly explosions and daylight aerial runs as jets of all type flew over. I got to watch a midnight assault by a squadron of MLRS deploy and later listen to the explosions. On many nights, the walls of the tents would waft from the concussion waves coming out of the desert and the explosions sounded like distant rolling thunder.

I dont ever remember, not once, from anyone, hearing, seeing or feeling anything that was any more powerful than any other bombing run...and one would think that a 5 kt nuke would very much be the exception. Can I say for certain that one was not dropped? Nope. But I cant validate it either.

As to GWS, I have 2 of 5 symptoms that I have been dealing with since 1991. You cant go to war without bringing something back. To some extent, every vet has a syndrome of some sort.

Where is the radiation cloud, other areas of the PG would have been effected even if it was one of those "bunker" busting nukes they are trying to develop. Gulf a syndrome does not really resemble radiation poisioning either.

Do other seismic centers collaborate this as well?

Also a Fuel Air Explosive can produce blasts in that range using conventional explosives

BS. Any other major power i.e China, Russia, etc would have been able to pick this up via satellite. To say the US did this without any evidence is alos to say that Russia, China and others saw it and didnt care. So if thats true.........

Don't know why I wasn't thinking about that at the time of my post. Would've shown up like a sore thumb on any satellite, not to mention how far away the loop of the explosion would of been.

It was air fuel or most of 1st Cav would be dead.We were in MOPP4 ,60 miles from Basra for 3 hours in 110 degree heat.
We were Atrp 1/7 cav,we lead the 18th Airborne Corp as their recon element at which my troop lead.I'm not happy with this war as I wanted to finish it then I am also aware of horibble things my country has done but no nuke in Desert Storm.

I served during the PGW in Arabia, Iraq & Kuwait. Army 1st Infantry Division. We were more concerned with BIO-Chem weapons. Our sensor alarms activated too many times to recall. We were halted inside SE Iraq on that date, waiting on the word as to the next "plan."

I kept a very precise journal during the entire period that my unit was there, 2 Jan-8 May 91 . Copies of it were later used by Gulf War Investigators in Virginia to try to determine correlations between dates, locations, observed weather conditions, sickness, and a host of other data. Unfortunately the issues of concern were never "proven" & time has stolen us by. I pressed the issues, as myself & several of my buddies were sick, but to no avail. The price for Freedom is sometimes very high.

US forces had available, Priority A (Nuclear) Weapons at that time. We were given the understanding that they would be used IF the war had escalated above a certain percentage of BIO-Chem levels. The air war period was dicey because apparently the USAF was striking Iraqi chem weapons, it was drifting onto us & our alarms were constantly ringing off. There are records on the events of the weapons being destroyed. One case in point was when US Forces found some & deliberately blew it up. That was the kind of crap that occured, in so far as I know.

As for a nuke detonation? I say bunk, it did not occur. We were due west of the alleged incident area. We would have seen or heard something. I know what MLRS look like going up, sound like impacting live targets downrange. We had a SCUD strike near us at one point while we were east of Hafar-al-Batin, Arabia. Yea, something like that is louder than all hell. Scuttlebutt travels faster than the wind over there too. Never heard any on a nuke. We had Battalion S-2 Intelligence buddies & were monitoring everything possible including BBC. Besides, politically speaking, that late in the war & during the ass kicking that was going on, the Iraqis couldn't retreat fast enough. I saw parts of the Highway of Death too. Nasty place.

Jim Brown has it all wrong in my view. I concur with "Where's The Truth" op above, no nuke, nor even a fuel-air (MOAB) device near Basra!

A nuclear weapon detonated in open air is almost impossible to hide.

The US has high flying aircraft specifically designed to detect the unique radioisotopes released by a nuclear weapon - certainly other countries do too.

Not to the mention academic and scientific institutions that would eventually also detect the fallout.

I cant remember how many MOP suits I went through, even though I was reusing a few of them, based on those sensors going nuts. The radio in my hummer would sound off at least once a day for about a week calling out MOP levels. I got so sick of putting that gear on and driving through the desert. A gas mask+100 degree dry day+dirty windshield = bad driver running into a ravine.
Yup, did that, been there. You should have heard the explicitives my Lt let out when the hummer went nose down. Its not Coney Island, but it was interesting.
