Cyclic Destruction / False Prophets

The Hopis and Hindus and several other religions talk about reccuring destructions that are cause by god himself or some other supernatural force. Other theories describe a cyclical destruction that is unavoidable as our solar system is exposed to galactic radiation etc.

What if someone/group took the knowledge of predictable destruction times and played themselves off to be "god" that would come destroy the world? thereby convincing everyone that he/she/it was in control.
