What I think we have here is a updated attempt at Temporal travel as run by our reptilian overlords. The smoking crater is obviously from the temporal backlash from their time travel device. Not being content at coming out at us from underneath they are now trying to come out at us from the past! You'll note the false sense of friendliness emanating from the reptilian in the lower left corner of the pic. Be not fooled!
