Obama's lack of foreign policy experience might actually be an advantage, Kosachyov said. McCain's political career began during the Cold War, while Obama was free of such a historical mindset and could take a fresh approach at rebuilding U.S.-Russian ties, he said.

"As a politician, McCain's formative years were during the standoff with the Soviet threat," Kosachyov said. "He still does not see a substantial difference between the Soviet Union and modern Russia."

Both McCain and Obama have repeatedly said they have no desire for a new Cold War.

Kosachyov also said Obama's softer stance on the planned U.S. missile-defense system in Eastern Europe makes him Russia's preferred candidate.

The key problem in U.S.-Russian relations is the absence of any real business interests, which act as an "insurance policy" in international relations, Kosachyov said. "In the United States, nobody is afraid of destroying ties with Russia," he said.

Russian-British relations have also come under increasing strain in recent years, though top officials in both countries have highlighted their burgeoning trade ties as an example that countries can do business despite political disputes.

Counting down for the posts that are implying that Obama is a communist and is working with the 'Reds'.

This has to be a good thing, surely? Other than people who sleep with their rifles in case there's a Red under the bed, no one want another Cold War - especially now.

Kosachyov's not saying Obama is going to be tool of the Russian government, just potentially open to better diplomacy. Even the comment about the missile defence system seems a positive thing to me as, right now, when people are losing business, houses, jobs and money hand over fist, it's obscene that anyone should be focusing on more war toys or 'my weapon's bigger than your weapon' bravado.

The world's a mess and if anyone is making comments that suggest they're open to making it less of a mess, then that's fine by me.

Oh, before some American tells me, an Englishman, to keep quiet on American-Russian relations, I will do when you can promise that your cold war or nuclear war isn't going to affect me either.

I don't think Obama is a tool of the Russians, but I do think he is inexperienced and naive and, quit frankly. a socialist.

The Russians know they will never fear Obama.

The policies of Bush/Cheney, to which our dear McSame subscribes, let to the situation when Russia can roll over Georgia for a couple of months without any fear of repercussions from the US. Sorry, I doubt that anyone, Obama included, can do any worse.

Of course they do not control him, but either would be bad for russia at this time, but obama, will be less focused on being aggressive, with russia on various issues. Though i think his advisers will not see it that way.

If obama wins will be interewsting to see what socialism, will do for america if they let him get on with it.

As an American I can tell you that I'll die before I let him convert this country in to his socialist vision. People WILL rise up (I hope).

Wait a cotton-picking minute! I thought the 'bail out' was "socialist"? Has the election happened and I've been asleep for the last couple of months? Or is Obama going to be a different "socialist"? Or perhaps it's not really "socialist" - despite many avowed anti-socialists screaming that the bail-out is "socialist" - when Bush is still in offence.

I'm glad that the Russians don't fear Obama. Fear makes people do and say stupid things. Respect on the other hand?

But you are already on the way. People are so dumbed down, they do not know left from right anymore. These things always happen in slow stages, but when you have an out and out socialist running to be president you can see, its come a long way already.

Your police must soon be like the stasi or similar by now. Also more government jobs coming, for people out of work, lol.

Can you share your plans on how exactly you will depart from us? See, these are big words and you should be prepared to comment.
