Bubonic Bacteria Believed Missing from Texas Lab

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 30 vials that possibly contain samples of the bacteria that causes bubonic plague were reported missing from a lab at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, a law enforcement official said on Wednesday.

The official had few details but said the FBI was trying to determine what had happened to the vials at the Texas facility about 330 miles west of Dallas.

"Apparently there are about 30 missing," he said.

But the official emphasized that the plague believed to be in the vials could not be used as a weapon of mass destruction. The vials could possibly kill one person but not a large group of people.

surely the bubonic plague is what wiped out half of medieval europe, then it was transported by rats. Given this could it not be given to a carrier such as a rat and then wipe out large numbers of people.

The very word plague means deadly contagious disease, are they saying this is a non transferable type??

I`d be a bit concerned myself

they think terrorists took them so they want to down play it

CNN.com is now reporting that they were found. Though the statements given by law enforcement officials are a bit vague. I am not convinced that they were all found... or at all.

Its not that they were found, it's that they were destroyed by a scientist before being reported missing.
