Russia plans to raise defense expenditure by 50% in 3 years

Russia is planning to increase its spending on defense by 50% in the next three years, a senior MP said Tuesday.

Russia's defense budget is believed to be less than a tenth of the United States', but the country's military expenditure has been steadily growing in the past few years. A large portion of additional expenditures would go toward raising salaries and improving the living conditions of military personnel, he added.

Russia is soon to adopt a new military doctrine that aims to transform the Armed Forces into a mobile and effective military force. Their structures will be "optimized" through the use of combined arms units performing similar tasks.

President Dmitry Medvedev said last week that Russia would make the modernization of its nuclear deterrent and Armed Forces a priority in the decade up to 2020.

"We must ensure air superiority, precision strikes at land and sea targets, and timely deployment of troops," Medvedev said. "We are planning to launch large-scale production of warships, primarily, nuclear submarines with cruise missiles and multi-purpose attack submarines."

A massive upswing in Russian defense spending, mainly to improve conditions for troops, which are by all accounts appalling and an enormous drag on morale, and strategically, a modernization of their sub fleet.

Though I don't believe we will see Cold War II, Russia is logically making a major investment in rebuilding and modernizing its defenses.

They will certainly continue to reassert themselves, and those subs are doubtless destined to be patrolling all the way to the coast of Venezuela to shadow our newly revived but as yet not reconstituted Fourth Fleet.

It ought to worry us all. In this meltdown, can we really justify the staggering defense budget and all the cool hitech toys the Pentagon is ordering?

If Russia's forces are the joke everyone says they are, why do we need them? to fight against the last generation of our own hitech? Quite true. Not only that, arms industry is one of the most lucrative areas in present day, wars and 'potential' threats fill a lot of pockets...

SOme folks act like that 50% is going to suddenly make their military great again. ALl that money is going to be able to (which is badly needed and will help them immensly) is give their soldiers better living conditions and basic eqipment cnd clothing upgrades. Russias military is somewhat of a paradox. In some ways its world class but in others its thrid world. As long as they focus on fixing up the 3rd world part and hold off on just buying more weapons, they will be much more effective.

Doesnt matter how many weapons you have. if your soldiers arent being taken care of and their moral is in the dirt, they wont care about using those weapons. Gotta fix the troops first Russia!!!

Russian soldiers aren't in as bad condition as some of you would like to believe. The western media likes to harangue about how bad it is when in fact they are still some of the best trained soldiers on the face of the earth.
The proof is in the invasion of Georgia, Georgia is a modern fighting force trained and equipped by U.S./Israel. The initial engagement had a brigade from Russian 58th army stationed in Vladivavkaz enter Georgia only about 10,000 Russians whereas Georgia had roughly 15,000-20,000 committed to the Tshikinvali area and yet vastly outnumbered the Russians still utterly steamrolled the Georgians with only limited air support/superiority. No modern fighting force had been that quickly and easily broken. So let's not get carried away with fantasies about how dilapidated the Russian armed forces are.

Secondly one must remember a very important fact is that everything in the Russian military industrial structure costs FAR LESS than their American counterparts. Like someone facetiously said before 50% of 5.00 is still only $7.50 and it's true that as they said Russia's current military budget is 1/10th of the U.S. yet on average Russian military hardware that is equal to or BETTER than that of the U.S. also costs about 1/5th to 1/10th of what the U.S. does. So an increase to even 1/4 of the U.S.'s military budget would put Russia just about on par.
The explanation for this is the fact that their scientists, engineers, workers etc are obviously making smaller salaries, they obtain materials cheaper, and various other reasons. Compare Russia's modern main battle tank the T90 that costs a little over 1 million USD$ to that of America's the Abrams that costs almost $5 million USD, etc.
So many of you are confused in thinking that Russia needs the same $800 billion USD budget to match the U.S. militarily, in fact as I said even them operating at 1/5th the U.S. military budget would probably put them on par so I would consider this 50% increase quite a substantial sum.

And also another thing I forgot to mention is that you have to look at the expansion over a longer period of time. Don't assume that right now 2008 their budget reflects the same as it was in 2000 or in the 1990's in fact over the past 7 years alone the military allocated budget has already been dramatically increasing by 10-30% a year, so if you take this added 50% increase over the next 3 years and look at the timeline you will see a dramatic rate of growth starting from the early 2000's.

There's no one in Russia's vicinity that can even pose a threat to Russia's military, not even the dilapidated laughable joke version of their military from the mid 1990's. The only country that borders Russia that would stand a chance in ANY type of war/conflict is China and from what I hear the Illuminati haven't been able to get much of a foothold into the Chinese system (thank god). And if you believe what Benjamin Fulford is saying, then you'll know that the chinese illuminati is supposedly at war with the global NWO Illuminati but is allegedly far more powerful than them and has threatened to expose and destroy them.

But as for western threats, that is what Russia does need to bulk up for, US/Nato have been acting and talking awfully nasty lately towards Russia so you never know what they have planned. But as far as a Georgia style attack from a Georgia style country, the only country with the balls to make threats in that vicinity who actually has a sizeable military is Ukraine but apparently they aren't even able to fend off a few loin cloth clad AK47 toting pirates from Zimbabwe so I don't know how affective they would be in a 1 on 1 confrontation with Russia.
