Fireball? I dont think so.

Hey guys, ive been on ATS a long time but never signed up, until i saw someting a weekend ago.

Me and my girlfriend were walking home from a party and having a chat about nothing in particular, when out the corner of my eye i saw something falling. Well, it wasnt until i ran out to see what was 'falling' i realized it wasnt actually heading down, but moving horizontally.

Now ive been here long enough to know what you guys are going to say about this because i dont have a picture, but i tried to take one but the night mode wasnt set on my phone (sh---y N73) and i just couldnt keep my eyes of this flaming object flying through the sky.

Now notice i said flaming, i know your thinking satalite or space junk and thats what i thought too at first. But there was a star like object moving at the same speed just above it. I have seen things in the sky but never like this..

Also, this was seen facing South in Victoria, Australia. I also heard someone in the Northern Territory see something similar on the same weekend.

What do you guys think? (If you need more info, let me know.)

Sounds like a large meteor.

Moving starlike object. Could be a satellite. How much sky did it move across and for how long was it visible? Did it move in a straight line across the sky?

Don't be disappointed about this sounding mundane. Seeing anything like what you describe is pretty bitchin'.

Haha yes i know, it was quite an expriance for both me and my girlfriend.

The object moved for about 20 - 25 seconds vertically across the sky, it didnt appear to be falling. Then dissapeared, instantly.

Chances are good it was a satellite. The disappearance happens when it enters the Earth's shadow.

I saw a large fireball years ago. It moved across the sky then broke, flaming, into 3 or 4 pieces. It lasted about 5-8 seconds. I was talking on the phone at the time. I yelled and gave the person on the other end a good start. Haven't seen anything nearly like it since.

a singular event was witnessed around Adelaide on Saturday, September 27:

At 1447-8 UT September 26 2008,or 00:17-8 am Sept 27 Local time,
a re-entry event was seen by dozens of persons around
Adelaide So. Australia ( 34.9S,138.6E ).
One person who saw it travel from low in North to overhead
and then low in South rang me up immediately. He saw it
for too long an interval for it to be a meteor.
Multiple components in parallel paths.
This was the re-entry of 2008 46E, a rocket stage
left in LEO during the launch of 3 Glosnass satellites a few days ago.
