I touched on McCain's comment in another thread. Apparently there's another bill passed in July that allows for $300B to buy toxic assets. Yeah, I didn't know about that one either (and apparently this crisis isn't THAT much of a surprise as certain elected officials have claimed).

I still don't know exactly how $1T comes into play unless the July bill is an "at any one time" type of situation - or unless McCain is absolutely confident that the revolving $700B bailout will pass this week.

It's an odd statement to make, for certain, and VERY disturbing.

No wonder McCain wants the presidency. After all the powers Dick Cheney has helped the executive branch pretend that they have, McCain wants to play divine leader too.

Ok, so why not use this trillion dollars and give it to the people. you give the people that money, and the mortgages will be paid off, and more houses will be bought. $300 is not enough of a stimulus to jump start the economy, but a trillion sure is.

Since the begining of the year 900 billions has been used to bail out the markets, in the last months or so over 300 billions has been used to bail again the markets, so actually the treasury department already has committed over trillion dollar, perhaps thats what McCain is trying to say.

Well, the Iranian new agency doesn't quote McCain correctly. McCain simply states that the President has the ability to start taking action now to shore up the economy, not that GW should bypass congress. He doesn't say "Spend a Trillion from the Treasury". That is a complete lie. He says to start buying up some of these loans now, while this deal is being worked out. The money has already been allocated. If money has already been approved, why isn't action being taken now. McCain is right.

McCain is also taking the political courage to stand up for passage of this legislation, even though it is not being supported by the public, because he feels it is best for the country, and he points this out. We have too many people in this country whose main technique is to committ to nothing, then claim to be part of the solution in the end, when they failed to take a stand throughout the process. Of course they go after everyone they can for any mistake that might have been made.

McCain continues to show leadership, while Obama continues to wait on the sidelines, to jump in when it is politically convenient. It is really sad that people can't tell leadership from political gamemanship. This is how we got GW.

And he is completely wrong, in Sec 1117 A,B,C, the Treasury is allowed to buy distress asstes from Fannie, Freddie and FHLB, it is not an authorization to buy assets from private institutions. Thats why they need this bill.

You would at least expect senators to be informed of the legislation that they talk or vote for.

One more time he shows he doesn't know anything about the economy. And to suggest that we should circumvent our democratic system is just despicable but what else you can expect from someone who wants to be a dictator.
