Bradford & Bingley is to be nationalised

Troubled bank Bradford & Bingley is to be nationalised, the BBC has learned.

Officials from the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) have been in talks with executives from the bank in a bid to secure its future.

BBC News business editor Robert Peston says the Treasury will almost instantaneously sell to a bank, or a number of banks.

Second bank to be nationalised in the UK. Royal Bank of Scotland has problems too, but not expected to face potential nationalisation or brought out.

But, this will be a major blow to the UK government who have passionately resisted nationalisation (Brown still doesn't mention "nationalisation" in relation to Northern Rock.)

just great more of my taxes going to save the rich from losing there money... when it comes to helping the rich stay rich my gov has loads of money but when the sick need drugs its lucky if you get help....

British government is trying to sell Bradford & Bingley to Spain, but it is likely nationalisation will happen later on today.

Nationalisation is expected to cost billions.
