Are you a born conservative (or liberal)?

Die-hard liberals and conservatives aren't made; they're born. It's literally in their DNA.

That's the implication of a study by a group of researchers who wanted to see if there was a biological basis for people's political attitudes.

They found to their surprise that opinions on such contentious subjects as gun control, pacifism and capital punishment are strongly associated with physiological traits that are probably present at birth.

A predisposition to political views. I am not that surprised.

I would however, like to have a look at the details of the research. They use the term fear in their analysis. By the description given, I could easily conclude the 'conservatives' were not showing fear, but disgust or uncomfortable with the images. I would then infer that means 'liberals' tolerate socially disgusting things more than conservatives.

I can't imagine being a wimpy, hand-wringing liberal is a genetic trait, because that would imply that, a hundred-thousand years ago, there were wimpy, hand-wringing liberal cave men, who stood around asking "eehh, is it really right for us to kill this sabre-toothed tiger? Isn't that infringing on the tiger's rights? ehhhhhhhhh!" while doing a little shuffle like they need to take a piss.

I can't see it, myself.

A study with only 46 people from one town can hardly be called conclusive. Besides that, the results mentioned in the article don't make sense. Conservatives are more horrified by a picture of a spider on a shrieking face and sudden loud noises than liberals? That would be laughable if it weren't being touted as truth in a major newspaper.

The only good thing in the article came from a professor who wasn't even a part of the research.

Fowler said the study added to the growing research suggesting that over millions of years, humans have developed two cognitive styles -- conservative and liberal. Cautious conservatives prevented societies from taking undue risks, while more flexible liberals fostered cooperation.

"For the species to survive, you need both," he said.
