Where Were You On 9/11/01?

It doesnt " matter" where anyone was. It is one of those things that happens in life that has such an impact you dont forget where you were. Ask anyone of the JFK era where they were when he was assassinated. RFK, and Martin Luther King as well . Or when the space shuttle blew up. These are moments that are indelibly imprinted on the people who lived through them.

I was 9 years old. I woke up in the morning and turned the t.v on (I wasn't allowed to watch t.v before school) and the first images I saw where of the first plane hitting the tower. At first I thought it was a movie, until I started changing the channels. Every channel it was the same thing.
I called out to my parents, they came in and my mum started to tell me to turn off the t.v and get ready for school, until she saw the screen. She just sat down on the couch in shock and all she could say was "Wow... Oh my god..."
She ran out to the phone to call my grandfather (who was in new york at the time) and as soon as he answered he started talking about the disaster...

It's a day I will never forget, It's burned into my memory. I'm from Australia, and even at the age of 9 I was wondering how people could do something that tragic and appalling to each other.

I got to school, and in morning assembly we had a minute of silence, watched some of the footage and where sent home for the day.

9/11, Lest We Forget.

I was outside in my old elementary school's yard because the Gymnassium was being worked on.

We were doing jumping jacks when we heard loud booms and when we looked, we saw smoke coming from where would normally be the towers.

Wow. See what I mean? A moment so amazing, so world shocking, even people from Australia and England and Germany know right where they were.

Mostly only things in the western world stays with us thou, shocking things happen every year in other countries, but we don't remember them. I guess it's the way things are.

For example there has been MANY bombings much worse than what happened on 7/7 in london, but nobody remembers them.

Anyway september 11th is one of the worse for sure.

I think we have to realise how lucky we truly are. We shouldn't just look at 9/11 with sadness, we should also look at 9/11 and realise how LUCKY we are that this kind of thing doesn't happen every day, week, month, year in the western world.

I had just woken up and was sitting at my kitchen table, preggo and due in one month, drinking coffee. My mom called and asked if I had the tv on. She said to turn it on. I was watching the coverage while talking to my mom and I saw the first tower "change" and then the heart sinking feeling as it folded. I just knew it was still full of people. and then the second tower... when that plane hit, it changed everything. I was hoping and holding my breath that they would have enough time to get out. I assumed it was some crazy suicide attempt. after the second plane I thought of the Japanese kamikazies.(sp?) It never occurred to me it could be a foreign attack. I assumed it was our own people doing it. edited to add, you know I really liked those blue twin lights. I think that is nice. I wish that was all they would put there besides a memorial.

i was working with a friend to fix a dodgy driveway, we heard reports on the news that a plane hit the WTC we thought it just a small cessna and wondered how someone couldnt see a big tower in their path, we got home about 6 that night and sw the news we were absolutley shell shocked.

And so many people do remember. It's a life altering moment. Just like the JFK Assassination or the Moon Landing.

I know I'm a day late, but I wanted to add in my reply.

I was in college getting ready for my first class. My mom called and told me to put on the news NOW. She was pretty panicked, so I asked her what was going on (all the while still getting ready). She refused and yelled at me to turn the tv on RIGHT NOW. It was absolutely surreal. My roommate and I just stared for several minutes before we could say a word. I don't think the reality of it sunk in until our part of campus was evacuated - we were in the shadow of one of the tallest buildings in the US and they were worried it was a target too.

I'm young, so I don't remember some of the older events in history, but this, and the Challenger and Columbia explosions, I'll never EVER forget where I was and what was happening :shk:

I was 12, I had called in sick from school (In Rio) and I remember getting a shocking call from my dad, telling me to turn the TV on. My elder sister, was visiting Rio at the time, and was watching some dumb chick flick and wouldn't change the channel. I forced her to, and then we basically sat there in awe for the rest of the day. Gob smacked mellow.gif

But the teacher knew, and said this would change our lives forever.

I was too young for most things, except for the Columbia Explosion and 9/11.

Hopefully I'll be shocked and in awe this November when they announce the first black president. To think we went from being lynched for going to the wrong restaurant to President of the great nation in 44years.(64 when the Civil Right Bill was signed into Law)
